_JIn a not so shocking twist, EPRA’s new fuel rates have lowered pump prices just a day after a sharp and widely criticised increase, creating confusion over Kenya’s pricing structure.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that following a directive to reduce VAT on petroleum products from 13 percent to 8 percent, petrol prices will drop by KSh 9.37 per litre while diesel will reduce by KSh 10 to retail at about KSh 196, with the changes taking effect at midnight.
The adjustment comes less than 24 hours after EPRA had published significantly higher prices under the April review cycle, where petrol rose to approximately KSh 206.97 per litre and diesel to KSh 206.84.
Those prices, based on a 13 percent VAT rate, had already reflected a reduction from the previous 16 percent VAT, but still triggered public backlash due to the scale of the increase and the broader cost of living pressures.
According to EPRA Director for Petroleum and Gas, Edward Kinyua, the earlier prices released were computed using the 13 percent VAT rate, and the latest revision directly reflects the further tax reduction to 8 percent.
The regulator moved quickly to issue a new press release to adjust the pump prices in line with the directive.
The rapid revision has raised questions about consistency in fuel pricing and policy communication, particularly after the National Assembly Energy Committee, chaired by Vincent Musyoka, indicated that the country has sufficient fuel stocks.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi had also told lawmakers that there is no national fuel shortage, attributing any supply concerns to actions by market players rather than availability.
The back to back announcements highlight the direct impact of tax policy on pump prices, with VAT changes immediately affecting the final cost to consumers.
At the same time, the sequence of a steep increase followed by an immediate reduction within hours has intensified scrutiny over how fuel prices are determined, communicated, and implemented.
