GSA small clerical mistake in your e-way bill doesn’t always mean a 200% penalty!
As per an official GST clarification, if the consignment is accompanied by valid invoice and e-way bill, then minor errors such as –
✅ Spelling mistake in name but correct GSTIN
✅ Wrong PIN code but correct address
✅ Small error in consignee address (locality correct)
✅ Mistake in 1–2 digits of document number or vehicle number
✅ Error in HSN digits but correct GST rate —
👉 Will not attract penalty under Section 129.
Instead, only a nominal penalty of ₹1,000 (₹500 under CGST + ₹500 under SGST) may apply.
This clarification saves businesses from unnecessary harassment where there is no intent to evade tax — just a technical error.
So next time your vehicle is stopped for a small e-way bill error — remember, you may only need to pay ₹1,000, not 200%!
