Try this fun reading game! ✏️ Write a mix of real and nonsense words on small pieces of paper. 🎯 Game: Keep the real words and toss the nonsense ones! This game helps children develop essential phonics and decoding skills in a playful way. Here’s how: ✅Word Recognition - Identifying real words strengthens their ability to recognize familiar patterns and sight words. Sorting nonsense words encourages attention to phonics rules and decoding. ✅Phonemic Awareness - Children practice blending sounds to determine if a word is real or not, enhancing their sound-to-letter connection. ✅Critical Thinking - Deciding which words to “keep” and “toss” builds problem-solving and decision-making skills. ✅Engagement - The game adds a hands-on, interactive element to learning, making it enjoyable and memorable. ✅Science of Reading Approach - By working with real and nonsense words, children reinforce decoding strategies, a key part of building reading fluency. Real CVC Words: cat, map, bug, pin, bed, dog, hop, fun, leg, sun, pig, van, top, rug, cup, bat, red, kit, pot, jam Nonsense CVC Words: zab, mip, nug, rit, bep, tog, hup, lum, teg, suv, pid, vak, tob, rup, lat, ref, kib, fot, jem Follow @learnwithkidscrafts for more simple and effective phonics activities! #readinggame #learningtoread #earlyliteracy #phonicsfun #homeschoolmom #handsonlearning #diymom #learningathome

Love this for a simple, hands-on station! Using muffin cups and a marble is such a clear way to show positional words like in, under, in front, behind, and between. It’s low prep, engaging, and makes abstract concepts so much easier for little learners to actually see and understand. 🧁✨🔎 #kindergartenactivities #positionwords #earlyliteracy #learningthroughplay #hands_on_learning lowprepactivities classroomstations preschoolactivities teacherapproved earlylearning playbasedlearning elementaryteacher classroomideas teachersofinstagram educatorlife

So much of early literacy begins long before a child ever picks up a pencil or decodes a word. We need to be so intentional in our early literacy instruction in a way that is developmentally appropriate and validating of a students’ literacy learning far before they ever enter the Kindergaten classroom 💬✨ One of the things I appreciate about IMSE’s Pre-K+ training @imse_og is the intentional focus on oral language development. Before students can read and write words, they need to hear them, say them, and understand how language works. Vocabulary, sentence structure, listening comprehension, and expressive language are foundational, not extras. Strong readers are built on strong talkers. When we prioritize rich conversations, explicit language modeling, and structured opportunities for students to speak and listen, we’re building the groundwork for decoding and comprehension. I can’t wait to learn more in this course and share my revelations about early literacy and learning with you! Early literacy isn’t just about letters. It’s about language. Comment “PREK,” and I’ll send you a link to learn more about the course! #ScienceOfReading #EarlyLiteracy #PreKTeachers #KindergartenTeachers #IMSE OralLanguage StructuredLiteracy LiteracyLeadership ReadingDevelopment TeacherProfessionalDevelopment

Again: nothing wrong with teaching the letter names. But when that’s ALL you teach, it’s not enough for them to learn how to read. That why I recommend starting with the letter sounds and adding the letter names after (or teaching both at once if you really want to.) Lots more advice on how to get started with letter sounds in my free training and in my Learning Sounds Course! (I also have more time to go into detail on this there!) #toddlerscanread #phonics #homeschool #learningtoread #earlyreading #earlyliteracy #toddlertips

This looks like just a brain break… but it’s actually sneaky fluency practice. Tracking left to right, pacing, oral language, attention, and working memory — all wrapped in something kids think is a game. We slowed the playback to .75 speed and it made a huge difference for my students. 💬 Comment BRAIN BREAK for the link. #primaryteacher #elementaryteacher #iteachkindergarten #earlyliteracy

This kind of activity isn’t what’s happening in classrooms of 30. But you can do it at home and it can make all the difference. 👇🏽 Teaching reading doesn’t have to look like “sit down and listen”. Yes, structure helps (and yes, I include it in my course)… But for most children, especially those who are struggling, it’s the play-based, multisensory moments that actually rewire the brain. ✅ This is how we move learning from short-term to long-term memory ✅ This is how we reach children who’ve switched off ✅ This is how we make reading feel joyful again If your child is feeling left behind, or if you’re disillusioned with the system, I see you. And I want to show you what actually works. 👇 Drop 20 in the comments and I’ll send you my FREE 20-minute training that explains the full reading journey, from toddler to confident, independent reader. You’ll walk away with practical solutions you can start using today, and a totally new understanding of why play matters. #splitdigraphs #phonicsathome #earlyreading #playbasedlearning #toddleractivities #preschoolactivities #scienceofreading #multisensorylearning #learningthroughplay #teachyourkidtoread #earlyliteracy #eyfsactivities #readingstrategies #readwithme #phonicsfun #schoolreadiness #neurodivergentlearners #dyslexiafriendly #adhdparenting #raisingreaders #earlyyearseducation #learningthatsticks #educationreform
