On Saturday I travelled down to Edinburgh for a day at the International Book Festival. I’ve been attending the festival for 15 years now (and organised two memorable student excursions there in that time with a friend and colleague) and it is always a treat. The Edinburgh International Book Festival, a key event every August, began in 1983. Initially biennial, it became an annual celebration in 1997. It has grown from "meet the author“ events to a large international festival with hundreds of events for adults, children, and schools. The festival aims to celebrate and share the power of writers and their ideas, fostering conversations and challenging perspectives. When I first went it was still in its Charlotte Square Gardens location but has moved twice since then. 2025 is the second year it’s taking place at the University of Edinburgh Futures Institute. I attended several author events and discovered some new writers, with my highlight of the day being a talk between well-known @nikita_gill and @veschwab. Honestly, if you want to encourage your kids to read or even write their own book, the @edbookfest is the best place to go! It’s also a whole day out filled with fun family friendly activities! There’s everything from workshops for young adults, to zine making, character meet and greets for little ones and so many fantastic authors talking about their journeys as writers and their fab books! We had tickets to see AF Steadman (they wrote the Skandar books series). It was an excellent talk and we learnt so much about how scary it can be submitting your own books to publishers, how many rejections you can get. But also the fun in making up unicorn names and basing characters on people in real life. Abi Elphinstone was also an amazing and engaging speaker. She got the audience involved and helped the kids understand the ‘what if’s’ for stories can be anywhere. Did you know she went to Mongolia to find a young eagle huntress as inspiration for one of her books?! An explorer and a writer!! 😍 So what does a day out at the festival look like? 📕 Explore the bookshop nd pick out new books 📗 Visit a workshop or kids area for activities 📘 Lunch from the pop up vans in the outdoor area 📙 Listen to an author speak about their books 📖 Get your book signed and meet the author in person! 📕 Have an optional ice cream between talks! 📗 Listen to another author! 📘 Check out the kids drop-in workshops, we did zine making 📙 Head home for dinner after another quick book buying session! 🙈😂 It’s a great day out! Just make sure you buy tickets for authors in advance, they may be sold out on the day! save for later!!! top tier event at @edbookfest during the Fringe: Lunch with @julielincooks at @jess_elliott_dennison’s beaaaauuuut place, Elliott’s Studio we may have otherwise taken a backseat on the Fringe this year since having moved away from Edinburgh however there was no way I wasn’t going to book us into lunch with Julie Lin at Elliott’s! our tickets as under 30s cost £75 per person, a regular ticket cost £100 per person. This, of course is on the pricier end of things but it was worth every penny. plenty of food and drink to go around and top tier demonstration of incredible recipes from Julie‘s new book Sama Sama all shared in a family style seating arrangement we learnt a lot about Julie’s journey to where she is now, her inspirations for the book & being half Scottish and half Malaysian + talking about all things relating to good food - the perfect event for foodies there are different chefs with events running through August every year.
