FIEd Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Bradley Cooper were all casual acquaintances before the movie was filmed, which Helms said he believed helped in establishing a rapport and chemistry amongst their characters.
Helms credited director Todd Phillips for “bringing together three guys who are really different, but really appreciate each others’ humor and sensibilities.”
Helms also said the fact that the story of the three characters growing closer and bonding informed the friendship between the three actors:
“As you spend fourteen hours a day together for three months, you see a lot of sides of somebody. We went through the wringer together, and that shared experience really made us genuine buddies.”

AJIn The Hangover, Zach Galifianakis didn’t actually know what he was doing in the casino, he was just told to “pretend he’s seeing numbers in the air.” The scene was actually shot inside the real Caesar’s Palace, with real dealers and extras reacting to him. Every awkward glance and pause was improvised, making Alan feel both clueless and oddly confident. What looked like genius in the movie was pure Zach, turning a simple bit into one of the most iconic moments on screen.

"As we did our final episodes with Steve, it was difficult to contain our sadness at losing our friend and our trusted number one. We cried a lot. The worst was the day we filmed his goodbye song," Fischer wrote. "People often ask if Steve knew we were going to sing to him, because the emotion on his face is so genuine. We'd all been given the lyrics and practiced the song in secret. Steve told me that as he was being led into the conference room, he knew something was up. But he did not know we were going to sing, and the whole thing was very moving."
"The first time we tried to film the scene, no one could get through it," she explained. "You can hear Ed Helms's voice breaking before the song even begins when he says, 'We want to thank you for everything.'"
