MOI’m trying to keep it cute… but this new Department of Education update under President Trump has me heated.
They just redefined what counts as a “professional degree,” and guess who got left off the list? Nursing. Advanced practice nursing. The very degrees that so many of us Black and brown women are grinding to get so we can level up our careers and our income.
According to a 1965 federal law, a professional degree is supposed to recognize that you’ve completed everything needed to start practicing and have skills beyond a bachelor’s. And somehow… nursing didn’t make the cut? Make it make sense.
The American Nurses Association already called it out and said this change will block access to essential funding for graduate nursing programs. If students can’t get subsidized loans, a whole lot of people are going to be priced out of the very degrees they need to move forward. And let’s be honest… who does that impact the most? Us. The women who already carry the weight of this healthcare system on our backs.
Black women have entered nursing in huge numbers over the last decade, and naturally we’re moving toward advanced practice. This feels like a direct attack on the growth, mobility, and generational wealth we’re trying to build.
I’m not shocked. But I am tired as hell!!
