During a discussion on issuing mandatory voter identity cards, then Congress MP from Calcutta South, Mamata Banerjee, delivered a strong speech supporting the move. The early 1990s saw repeated allegations of booth capturing, proxy voting, intimidation and political violence, especially in parts of eastern India. The Election Commission had begun pushing for Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) to prevent impersonation and ensure only genuine voters cast ballots. In this context, Mamata Banerjee argued that without identity cards, elections could be compromised by money power, muscle power and mafia influence. She stressed that proper voter identification was essential to protect democracy and stop fake voting, Her intervention came at a time when voter ID cards were not yet universally implemented, and Parliament was debating whether the system should be expanded nationwide. कोलकाता में चुनाव आयोग ने संशोधित मतदान आंकड़े जारी किए हैं। जांच से पता चलता है कि बंगाल के पहले चरण के चुनाव में मतदान प्रतिशत के मामले में तो सारे रिकॉर्ड टूट गए हैं। इसके साथ ही एक और रिकॉर्ड टूटा है, वह है SIR प्रक्रिया के कारण कुल मतदाताओं की संख्या कम होने के बावजूद, 2021 के आंकड़ों की तुलना में कुल वोटों की संख्या में भी बढ़ोतरी। गुरुवार को 16 जिलों में फैली 152 सीटों पर 2021 में इन्हीं सीटों से जुटाए गए आंकड़ों की तुलना में लगभग 24 लाख ज़्यादा लोगों ने वोट डाला। पश्चिम बंगाल में इस बार 3.35 करोड़ से ज़्यादा मतदाताओं ने अपने मताधिकार का इस्तेमाल किया। 2021 में यह आंकड़ा 3.1 करोड़ था। यह बढ़ोतरी तब हुई जब इन 152 सीटों पर मतदाताओं की संख्या में 18 लाख की कमी आई थी। 2021 में इन सीटों पर 3.8 करोड़ मतदाता थे। इस बार SIR के बाद यह आंकड़ा घटकर 3.6 करोड़ रह गया। #WestBengalElections #ElectionCommission
