Her mother ran a small, home-based pickle-making business in Pune, India, but constantly felt insecure and marginalized within her own family because she could not speak English fluently. Shinde wrote the script as a personal apology to her mother for the times she had unconsciously judged or embarrassed her for her lack of language skills. This motion picture also marked the highly anticipated return of the legendary Indian actress Sridevi to the silver screen after a fifteen-year hiatus. Before accepting the role of Shashi, she had completely retired from acting to focus on raising her children. She agreed to take on the project because she found the character’s journey of self-discovery and struggle for basic respect within a modern, English-speaking household deeply relatable and emotionally genuine.
