AL✨ Fireflies are disappearing—and it’s not just about the climate. The real culprit is streetlights. Their mating ritual depends entirely on light signals, and in the constant glow of our cities, males and females simply can't find each other. In parts of the US, firefly populations have plummeted by over 50% in the last 30 years, specifically in areas with intense night lighting.
Few realize that firefly larvae live in the soil, feeding on snails and worms. When fields are sprayed with pesticides, it doesn't just kill pests—it wipes out the fireflies' food source. Since adults only live for a few weeks, if one generation fails to reproduce, the next year is left empty.
Fireflies also face a silent enemy: asphalt. They need grass and moist earth to lay their eggs, but when meadows are replaced by parking lots, they lose their only nesting grounds. In Japan, entire villages have lost their fireflies after rivers were straightened and banks were dried out for construction.
