Just like the #allosaurus model from earlier, the @ummnh_museum also had a model showing the bones, muscles, and skin of the giant early whale Basilosaurus. While I’m not a fan of the “manatee” skin color and appearance, I must say this model is also of incredibly detail. . . . . . #basilosaurus #dorudon #eocene #cenozoic #walkingwithbeasts #ummnh #fossils #napc2024

The Jaws That Ruled the World 🦷👑 Imagine hearing that roar echoing across the savanna! 🔊 This is a reconstruction of a Hyaenodon, one of the most successful predators in Earth's history. For millions of years, these animals were the "lions" of their time. They had massive heads and incredibly powerful jaw muscles that allowed them to take down prey much larger than themselves. It’s a terrifying but beautiful glimpse into the Eocene epoch, where mammals were fighting to become the dominant species on the planet. #NatureReels #Hyaenodon #ApexPredator #BoneCrusher #AncientHistory #Eocene #WildlifeArt #BigBeasts #ScienceFacts

Dorudon Bubble Reveal🫧🐋 In warm, shallow Eocene water, a curtain of bubbles parts—and a Dorudon’s head emerges first, skin pores and subtle mottling catching a wet sheen as its eye tracks naturally. The camera follows from slightly above, then dips into a clean side profile as the ancient whale makes a gentle turn, revealing its streamlined body and tail fluke over coral rubble and a sandy seafloor with drifting silt and sunlit particles. Prehistoric birds are some of the coolest animals to ever evolve on this planet. Even while the dinosaurs were dominated the land, birds were becoming diverse in the sky and water. After the K-Pg extinction, birds were one of the surviving groups to proliferate in the vacuum left by the now-extinct dinosaurs. While many maintained the flying niche, some became giant ground dwellers. Flightless seed eaters like Gastonis were once thought to be terror predators of the early Eocene. In fact, giant carnivores ground birds did evolve, like the 6 foot tall Terror bird Titanis. Others like the giant Moa reached heights of nearly 12 feet tall and survived up until only a few centuries ago. During the Cretaceous, a group of aquatic birds like Hesperornis evolved to fill the niche most similar to what penguins do today. And the giant penguin Kumimanu evolved in the early Eocene to reach weights of over 200 pounds. Needless to say, bird evolution after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs was incredibly interesting and worthy of admiration and study. . . . . . #fossilbird #gastornis #dodobird #diatryma #moa #titanis #terrorbird #hesperonis #kumimanu #fossils #eocene #cenozoic #archaeopteryx

Titanoboa - Colombia’s Titan What is longer than a yellow school bus (which comes in at 40’ if you were wondering) and weighs more than a rhino (more than 2,500 lbs!) and has a 16” long skull? #Titanoboa, “Titan boa,” of course! This Colombia kingpin lived ~59 mya in the #Paleocene of Colombia. The longest and heaviest of all known #snakes was spectacular in every way. As a vertebral guy I was stunned at the massiveness of its spine. It was discovered in an environment that was tropical, with high heat and high humidity. It is rare we find fossils in those kinds of environments. Envision a jungle floor, an animal dies and, after being scavenged, insects and bacteria take over, further breaking down the skeleton. Plants grow over it and fossilization fails to transpire. Thankfully, given enough time, even the most improbable of events becomes possible, thus massively cool beasts like Titanoboa bones are found. Initially found sans cranial elements, a 2013 abstract discussed skull elements and showed the teeth, and the shape of many skull bones, strongly suggest Titanoboa was #piscivorous. It was found near large #lungfish and large #arapaima relatives. The link to the original paper is here (you will need researchgate.net access privileges FYI): https://bit.ly/3cFKF2W and a follow-up abstract briefly discussing cranial material is here https://bit.ly/2OHYRAt Science Museum of Minnesota in Minneapolis @SMMPaleo @sciencemuseummn had this near life-size reconstruction. It is big! A recent challenger to the throne was named from 27 vertebrae found in India, #Vasuki, living in the Middle #Eocene -47 mya.It is the longest #madtsoiid, a group of extinct snakes. #Madtsoia, which afaik is the longest #Cretaceous (and #Mesozic) #snake known. #FossilCrates

I found an abundance of fish fossils at @fossilsafari during my visit alongside some incredible snails, scales and coprolites! The most common fish at the site is Knightia. It was a herring-like, schooling fish which averaged about 3-4 inches in length, though it could grow up to 10 inches long. Like many modern freshwater fish Knightia had four fins, ones on its back, stomach, pelvis, and anus. It would have eaten plankton and algae and was a food source for many of the larger fish like Mioplosus and Phareodus that also inhabited the lake. Phareodus is an extinct genus of bony tongue fish that lived in the Eocene epoch. They resembled bulky arowanas and had a mouthful of vicious teeth. These fish are one of the most prized fossils coming out of the Green River Formation: their unique pectoral fins and huge splayed anal fins are attractive to collectors and look quite excellent when on display. These beauties averaged 7 inches long, though the longest Phareodus on record comes in at 2 ½ feet. Approximately 50 million years ago during the Eocene period, three huge lakes covered parts of Southwest Wyoming. The fine grained sediments that collected at the bottom of these lakes preserved the fossils of millions of fish, plants, insects, reptiles and other flora and fauna. These sediments which has since turned to stone are now part of the Green River Formation. You can find more information on knightia and Phareodus and other Green River fish on @fossilera ‘s website! After a long stretch of planning, problem-solving, and a lot of careful thought, we’re finally ready for the next major step with this Eocene crocodylomorph, Borealosuchus wilsoni. 🐊⚒️ This specimen is a true monster from the Green River Formation, and flipping it safely has been one of our biggest logistical challenges. Thanks to innovative rigging, strategic engineering, and a solid game plan, we’re prepared to rotate the first half and begin removing matrix from the dorsal side to lighten the overall load. If all goes well, the next phase will involve reinforcing the specimen with carbon fiber, ensuring long-term stability and safe handling. Stay tuned—first, let’s see if we can pull off this flip. 🙌 #FossilPrep #Borealosuchus #GreenRiverFormation #Paleontology #PrepLab #FossilRestoration #Eocene #Crocodylomorph #ScienceInProgress
