Two of our team headed to the World Expo in Osaka this September. To showcase circular citizen engagement as part of the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform workshops, we designed a unique workshop that combines basic repair skills with rich cultural heritage. Using the Japanese sashiko stitching technique, participants at the World Expo hand-stitched a unique coaster inspired by the Japanese flag. Each coaster is made with: 👉 Foxford blanket offcuts, once a staple in Irish homes 👉 Irish linen patches from designer Jennifer Slattery, naturally dyed with madder root by Malú Colorín from Talú Earth, the same dye traditionally used for women’s aprons on the Aran Islands 👉 Scrap yarns from Studio Donegal and Foxford, both continuing Ireland’s weaving traditions 👉 An origami Menko pouch, a Japanese craft used to package the kit sustainably within its own instructions This project weaves together Irish and Japanese traditions, natural materials, and circular design thinking, turning repair into a beautiful memento.
