A new trend has started popping up in my feed: standing barefoot on coarse salt for 10 minutes. Interesting… But why?? Your feet contain thousands of nerve endings connected to the nervous system. The theory is that standing on salt gently stimulates these points, helping muscles release tension and support circulation. I take my role as an educator seriously, so I’m a big believer in backing up any information I share with sources. So first things first, I went to google! I couldn’t find any clinical trials or medical references to this practice, but a lot of discussions on it and references to salt bath soaks. Skeptical but open minded, I gave it a try…. For science! And wow! I was surprised. How to try it: 🧂 Use coarse sea salt or epsom salt, the chunkier the salt, the better! 🧺 Spread a thin layer on a towel or basin 🦶 Stand barefoot for about 10 minutes ⏱️ 💧 Rinse your feet afterward 📦(Save the salt to repeat later??) Try not to sit down, you want your weight on your feet, and move your foot around every minute or so to really stimulate the bottoms of your feet. Similar to acupressure techniques, at first you might feel a slight tingling, but soon enough, your body softens into it, breathing slows, thoughts quiet down, and your body begins to relax 😌 What’s going on here? You know how good it can feel to walk barefoot in the sand, or even on a rocky beach? Same thing happing there. Standing on salt gently stimulates nerve endings on our feet, helping muscles release tension and supporting circulation. No, I didn’t start medication, but I was very close when I experienced that flare (or relapse — who knows) a few years ago. I was barely able to walk or stand on my left leg. It lasted almost 4 weeks, and it was the scariest thing to experience just 3 years after my diagnosis. I didn’t take painkillers, and I’m not sure if they would have made a difference. What I did was increased my Vitamin D supplement and rested. I had faith that this was just temporary and that I needed to take better care of myself. I did gentle exercises at home when I could, I meditated, I took Epsom salt baths, and I went to bed every night praying that the next day I would be able to walk again. That experience taught me that we are stronger than we think and that everything — all the pain and suffering — is just temporary… And that our bodies are incredible and capable of healing. 🧡 #mshope #msawareness #ms #multiplesclerosissupport #multiplesclerosis
