NO GHD - No Problem πŸ˜‰ If you don’t have access to a GHD machine, there are a couple of great alternatives to simulate the GHD sit-up for core and hip flexor strength. Variation 1: Barbell Setup with Boxes Set up two boxes (at 30”) and place a loaded barbell about 15 cm above the boxes. Secure the barbell on the rig. Sit on the boxes with an ab mat for support and extend your legs under the barbell. Perform sit-ups, simulating the GHD movement. Variation 2: Dumbbells and Ab Mat Anchor your feet under two heavy dumbbells, laying on an ab mat for support. Perform sit-ups, focusing on engaging your core and hip flexors. These alternatives replicate the GHD sit-up, which is excellent for building core strength and improving hip flexor endurance, essential for CrossFit movements. . . . . #CrossFit

Jeepneys...the most beautiful form of transportation known to man. I hear they're phasing them out soon so you won't see them on the roads for too much longer. Imagine a mini school bus and a military jeep have a beautifully decorated baby. That's a jeepney. They can fit anywhere from 10-20 people (even more if you're on the sides, back, or top) and are the most popular form of public transit in the Philippines. At 7-30 pesos for a ride they're also very affordable. As a foreigner on a busy road in the Philippines, it can be intimidating to try to understand how jeepneys operate. Most Jeepneys operate on a designated route (much like a city bus in the states.) They usually have a sign displayed somewhere in the front saying where the Jeepney is going. You can also see routes on Google maps. You can hail a Jeepney (and get off) at almost any location along its route, which makes it incredibly convenient. To hail an oncoming Jeepney just raise your hand like you're hailing a cab. When the Jeepney stops just squeeze on in! Paying is easy. During your ride extend your arm towards the driver and yell "Bayad po" (paying please). The other passengers will assist in passing your money to the front and will also pass any barya (change) back to you. Be sure to use coins in the morning as drivers won't yet have enough change for large bills. When you'd like to disembark, tap the metal handrail with a coin while saying "para po" (please stop) or and hop off! Also, Americans are used to spreading their knees out while sitting on public transportation as a means to have more space. Technique-wise, I always recommend starting with the J-hook technique πŸ”’ It’s the safest option, allows for quick climbs on the rope, andβ€”most importantlyβ€”makes it easier to bail cleanly if something goes wrong. Other variations may feel easier, but tangled feet + an emergency bail can turn ugly fast πŸš‘ ⚠️ The biggest fault I see: Athletes over-extending their arms trying to β€œcover more distance.” It feels productive… but it’s not. ❌ Over-reaching burns the arms ❌ Turns a leg-driven movement into an upper-body pull ❌ Limits your ability to bring the knees to the chest 🧠 The fix: β€’ Keep the arms tight β€’ Lats engaged β€’ Rock back in support β€’ Bring knees toward chest/elbows β€’ Lock the rope with the J-hook β€’ Extend the legs with the rope in front, driving through the hamstrings 🚫 Don’t let the heels kick back and quad-kick your way up β€” that’s a common mistake. Keep a rounded back (hollow chest) and just hold for 10-20s. Intermediate: Tuck hang hold to full extension πŸ”‘ Feet together as you extend. Do it with control and lower down slow. Almost there: Strict straddle toes to bar πŸ”‘ Starting from a hang lift legs up in a straddle all the way up to the bar and lower down with feet together. A straddle is easier than feet together so this will help you bridge the gap between full reps and the tuck extension.
