A Real Deep Dive: Living with FND As FND is an invisible illness, it’s easy to assume that those who have it are doing okay, or it’s not as bad as it seems. Which is why it’s important to share real stories and real information, from individuals who live through it daily. The condition is unpredictable and no days are the same (for me at least). I have lived with FND for 2 years now and it has been life changing. I no longer live a ‘normal’ life and I cannot be as independent as I used to be. Sharing my diagnosis online has been the best decision I’ve made in my 8 years of being an online creator. It’s allowed me to speak with others who are going through the same thing as me and educate those who are curious or might be living through the same thing. God heals 💯 Video credit: @red_rapunzell - I share her story in hopes for awareness and advocacy. I also am greatful I recorded certain things cause it was helpful for the drs. This came out of the blue with no warning. There is no way anyone could have predicted this. Anaira was diagnosed with a rare condition called Functional Neurological Disorder. It’s not caused by structure abnormalities in the brain but rather by the way the brain sends and receives signals. It’s not a “hardware issue” it’s a “software issue” with how the brain communicates. Basically a disconnect between the mind and body. So essentially there is no cure nor magical medicine to just “fix” the problems. She will have good days where she needs no mobility support, and others where she needs some. Multiple therapies will help to an extend. Her FND is currently causing weekness in the legs, vomiting, and non-epileptic seizures. Read about my FND recovery journey below ⬇️ when i was 13 i was diagnosed with FND. i felt hopeless and out of place, like many people with FND. i had symptoms for many years before i got access to a course that changed my life. that course is on a website called @fnd_courage 💙🧡 FNDcourage hosts an online course that you can access from anywhere in the world. as someone who was often having symptoms and who was also in school, this was perfect for me because i did not have to travel to learn more about my nervous system, i could instead do it from my living room! the online course meets weekly (or twice a week if you opt for a study session). it taught me more about my nervous system than any doctor had, went at a pace i could understand, and helped me on my journey to getting my life back. when i was 16, i also attended Boulder Center for Neuro Health. I asked what you wanted to see for FND Awareness Month and this story was wanted more than anything else. It took me an entire day to go through the hospital paperwork, my personal archives, and write this script. I am well aware that it doesn’t cover absolutely everything and that people will have questions. April is Functional Neurological Disorder Awareness Month 🧡💪🏼 Thanks @walkingwitharya for gathering furrriends to bring awareness to this cause & inviting us to join in 💕 Out bandanas are made by @bibbybubby Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) describes a problem with how the brain receives and sends information to the rest of the body. FND can have a wide range of symptom presentations, and varies from person to person. Sometimes symptoms are visible and unavoidable, often times, FND is invisible. People with FND are often dismissed, misdiagnosed and left to figure life out with little to no resources. Medical professionals are given poor training and this can lead to patients being told that they are faking their disorder or not trying hard enough to get better. FND is just as debilitating as other neurological condition and needs more awareness and education to improve patients quality of life. Let us take a minute today to educate ourselves about FND and be empathetic towards those who face these challenges, even if we can not fully understand ❤️‍🩹
