Can spending time with friends and family improve heart health? Rachel D. Yankey, MD, a board-certified family physician, discusses how fostering meaningful connections can help reduce cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure. Social connectivity, alongside healthy eating and staying active, has been shown to support better heart health. Heart disease doesn’t wait. Neither should you. We are so proud of these College of Medicine students! Seven were chosen to take part in a 10-week program at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, where they are paired with physician mentors to gain hands-on experience on specific research projects. Our inaugural group of students include Jade Bowers, Jacob Alan Guzzino, Brittney Jabot, Kamelia Klejc, Owen Moore, Shivani Jayendra Patel and Claudia Silver. Mayo mentors include doctors Ivan Porter (M.D., 2008), Emmanuel Gabriel, Charles Ritchie (M.D., 2008), Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, Daniel Triffiletti, Beau Toskich (M.D., 2007) and Chrisandra Shufelt. Strong partnerships help us build an excellent student experience – and our partnership with the @mayoclinic is a prime example. #FSUHealth #mayoclinic

The decision to transition Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare to FSU Health is raising questions about transparency, equity, and the future of local healthcare. What’s going on between TMH and FSU?
Tallahassee Memorial Hospital is a community nonprofit hospital that serves everyone, regardless of ability to pay. The City of Tallahassee actually owns the land and the hospital assets — the buildings, the equipment, the beds — and leases them to TMH for one dollar a year. FSU is already building a new Academic Health Center next door with state funding, opening in 2026. But now, FSU wants the City to transfer ownership of all the hospital land and assets to them. FSU would then lease it all back to TMH, rebrand it as “FSU Health,” and TMH would pay for that rebranding. Why does FSU want this?
Ownership would give them prestige, help them compete with other major universities, and unlock research and funding streams that aren’t available under the current structure. So why are people concerned?
Because this means a major loss of local control. Under the proposed framework, most of the board seats would be tied to FSU and FSU’s board, like all university boards in Florida, it’s appointed by the governor. That brings heavy political influence into our community hospital. The agreement being discussed is only a non-binding MOU (memorandum of understanding), there’s no official appraisal of what we’d be giving away, and most of this has happened out of public view with only two meetings for community input. Are there alternatives?
Yes. We could put it on the 2026 ballot, like other cities have done. We could follow the Tampa General/USF affiliation model instead of a full transfer. Or, a compromise: the City could sell only the land for the new Academic Health Center to FSU and keep the rest community-owned. Bottom line:
Improving healthcare in Tallahassee is essential, but a decision this big shouldn’t be rushed, and it shouldn’t happen without transparency, community understanding, and a real look at alternatives that protect local control. #tallahassee #tlhpol
