‼️SO as usual I have thoughts and feelings (yes, I typically have aggressive, thoughts and feelings, because I feel deeply about many things and yes, you may surmise that life inside my brain is exhausting and yes, you would absolutely be correct!)
😃how ‘bout INSTEAD of feeling, defeated by “quitting” or “giving up” on breast-feeding, you recognize it instead you made “intentional decision to feed your baby nutritious formula instead of milk from your breast” after weighing the pros and cons?
😀and how ‘bout instead of feeling or being made to feel that you are somehow weak or needy, and that you “need to ask for help“ during the postpartum time after you’ve grown a human and birth to human – you are helping the community at either who are related to you or who you may need to hire to actually do what THEY were meant to do—NAMELY that women were not meant to birth alone and nurture completely alone… We were meant to nurture infants in community, and we do not need to feel as though we are asking for help as much as we are asserting what the norm is supposed to be
💜 matters… It is not the only aspect of any movement of course… We need legislative change for pregnancy in the postpartum period, but we also need societal ideology to change and one way to do that is through changing the language that we use on ourselves so that we can teach back on us…
🙂 yes, I can imagine many of you hearing this and thinking to yourselves “it’s only words, it doesn’t really matter! She’s making a big deal out of nothing…“ But I will offer again that it is not the only thing that matters, but it is one of many aspects that needs to be changed and language has the ability to really affect people deeply in ways that I believe we don’t even really understand
💚today @teawithmd posted about the fact that she had hired postpartum help and received a lot of support in her comments, but of course, received the occasional obnoxious judgment—we can do better societally ESPECIALLY as a society who claims to value motherhood so much.

AUAxe has been home from the NICU for 2 weeks and we are so excited to celebrate his one month birthday! Our days and nights hour together as we feed him every 3 hours on the dot, between pumping, diapering, swaddling and rocking that usually only leaves us with about an hour to sleep in between each feed. We will likely switch to shifts soon but since I’m still recovering from my C-Section & nursing we’re tackling everything together.

THAs a pediatrician & mom of 3 who has taken care of MANY kids through my career, I have found one thing to be true: whether you give human milk or formula will NOT be the difference between your child’s future success or failure.
It is also not the difference between your success or failure as a parent.
Know this: yes, it is true that there are many known benefits to human milk for babies.
But the most critical thing for a baby is a parent who is connecting with them.
It is easy to start to feel like a failure if you struggle to do what books, celebs, extended family, even your physicians tell you to do.
Each of my kids received breastmilk & formula. Different kinds, for different lengths of time, for different reasons.
But one thing wasn’t different? My feeding journey was not what I expected for any of them.
I had the hardest time/most guilt with my first. She was diagnosed as “failure to thrive” & I became obsessive about her intake, read literature on increasing supply, power pumped, worried about whether she was spitting up too much.
Worried I was failing her.
You know what? She’s 10 now. And fine. What I learned from that experience has completely changed my practice as a pediatrician.
I’m not going to pretend I didn’t feel guilty or obsess with my other 2 kids (I’m still Type A, after all…) but I accepted that there are a lot of factors at play when it comes to weight gain & feeding. As parents, we are not always in control of all of them.
The best thing we can do is learn to pivot, adjust, do what is best for our unique situation.
I get asked all the time: “BM or formula, which is better?” Even hearing a question phrased like this implies that there is a black-and-white, right-size-fits-all type of answer. That one approach is better for everyone. But no.
Remember: our goal is not just a healthy baby, but also healthy SANE parents. This is more likely to help your baby thrive than the milk they get.

And so time for us not to feel shamed or responsible for the feelings of the men around us, @americanair.

When you do see a mama nursing her baby, a smile and a head nod can be a nice little gift.
See someone harassing her? Forget being a good girl! See something, say something. We have to stand together, however we are feeding our babies.

Why is there so much stigma around formula feeding? I exclusively breastfeed my other boys over a year until they self weaned. But I did it at the expense of my own mental health. Yes I know breastmilk is superior to formula. You don’t think knowing that doesn’t make me feel guilty?
I choose to mix feed this time because having a healthy and present mother is what IS BEST for my boys. I’m enjoying the best of both worlds! I’m still breastfeeding my little bestie and also giving him some formula/ EBM bottles when needed.
Exclusively breast feeding my last baby almost killed me. Never again will I let myself be pressured into destroying my health to appease society.
To all the mums who are breastfeeding, formula feeding or mix feeding. YOU ARE AMAZING 👏🏼👏🏼
