Travelers are experiencing long lines at airports as TSA workers call out amid the partial government shutdown. Approximately 60,000 TSA officers who have gone over a month with partial pay began receiving their first $0 paychecks last week. Many say they are living in fear, with some taking on extra jobs or even leaving the agency altogether to make ends meet.

NEW: Workers at the Transportation Security Administration missed their first full paycheck Friday as a partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security drags on in Congress. . TSA officers have continued working without pay for nearly four weeks, leading to staffing shortages, longer airport security lines and flight delays. . More than 300 officers have reportedly quit since the shutdown began, while unscheduled absences have surged. Some airports are now advising travelers to arrive up to five hours before departure. . Senate Democrats rejected a bill to reopen the department on Thursday. Washington appears nowhere near close to figuring out a solution. . #GovernmentShutdown #TSA #TravelDelays #USPolitics #AirTravel

TSA staffing shortages tied to the partial government shutdown led to hours-long security lines at airports in Houston, Atlanta, and New Orleans on Sunday — just as spring break travel is kicking off. The partial shutdown began Feb. 14 and only affects the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA. Democratic lawmakers are demanding changes to President Trump’s immigration policies, though much of the immigration enforcement carried out by DHS is already funded. Now, the White House is blaming Democratic lawmakers for the long lines. The partial shutdown means about 50,000 TSA agents are currently working without full pay. It’s the second time in six months they have faced a shutdown, following a record 43-day government shutdown in late 2025. TSA agents received 30% of their paycheck last week and are set to miss their whole paycheck next weekend, unless funding is restored. Some agents call in sick or miss shifts as they take on second jobs to pay their bills. Passengers at Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport were told to arrive up to five hours early on Sunday because wait times at security checkpoints stretched to three hours. As of Monday morning, security wait times were still over three hours. At Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, the security lines on Sunday stretched into the parking garage. The staffing shortages and long wait times come as spring break travel is ramping up, with the DHS posting to X on Sunday: “There is ZERO reason for spring break travel to be held hostage for political points — Democrats must end this DHS shutdown NOW.” The delays also come as DHS is getting a new leader. President Trump fired Secretary Kristi Noem last week, and said Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) will replace her starting on March 31.
