My son lived in Florida since he was three, and now this year in fifth grade we moved back to Minnesota. Once the snow started falling, he learned something new! Elementary school kids bring an extra bag with them to school in the winter with snow pants, winter boots, gloves, and a hat so they can play outside at recess! 🤯 This is something he had no idea about as a Florida kid, so it was really cute watching him get in the habit! He loves winter recess and all the fun they have in the snow! ❄️ As a midwest kid myself, this seemed so normal and it felt odd that I had to teach him, but depending on where you live in the country, we all have our own sense of “normal!” Anything unique that kids in your part of the country do? #momlife #motherhood #winter

How you handle conflict MATTERS. This one is a journey, so hang with me for a minute. Conflict is unavoidable in classrooms. We can reduce it, sure. But we will never eliminate it. And when conflict pops up? Everyone gets triggered. So, let’s say you have a kid who is causing conflict by yelling things across the class. Our first thought may be “oh, this hurts instruction because it interrupts class” but it doesn’t end there - not even close. 🚩Othering that student with our tone, language, or body language
→ we deepen their unmet need for belonging
→ and we increase the likelihood the behavior continues 🚩 Modeling exclusion (shame, shunning, ignoring, public correction)
→ we quietly set a classroom norm for how people should be treated when they’re annoying, loud, or inconvenient That norm becomes:
“When someone bothers me, it’s okay to ___.” Fill in the blank with whatever your system uses:
❌shame.
❌shun.
❌insult.
❌ignore. None of those solve why the student is yelling. And then it snowballs. If little Ashlyn is shunned for yelling in second grade…
In third grade, peers avoid her—so she gets louder.
In fourth grade, they fear her—because last year she shoved someone.
In fifth grade, she’s just “that kid.” Hello, label.
Hello, chronic survival brain. 🚩
Goodbye, thinking brain. And when we have classrooms full of kids who feel like they’re walking on eggshells around each other? 🛑We have kids who cannot access learning.
Including literacy.
Plain and simple. So let this be your motivation to stop sweeping conflict under the rug. It’s not neutral.
It’s not harmless. Comment FLOWCHART✨ for my free guide to navigating conflict. And comment 💥REWIRE to begin the journey of rewiring your classroom.💛

On Friday, I spent my day off in this library — nearly 13½ hours going shelf by shelf, book by book. There was joy in reorganizing and imagining what this space can become… and also sadness. Some books were water-damaged, some beyond repair, and a few raised concerns about mold. Letting them go was hard, but it was done with care — to protect the rest of the collection and make room for healthier stories ahead. I’m taking a chance on this library. And I hope it takes a chance on me. If you’ve ever loved a school library, I’d love your encouragement as this transformation continues. I’m also so grateful for ideas and suggestions — especially favorite series for kindergarten through fifth grade that deserve a spot on these shelves. I do have a wish list as well, and any support in helping replace some of the books we had to say goodbye to would mean more than I can say. Every step forward helps shape a space where kids can fall in love with reading again. 💚📚 Thank you for cheering this process on. #schoollibrary #readersofinstagram #takeachance

It’s not just her courage that inspires me—it’s her classmates. Campbell is in fifth grade now. The tender age when fitting-in is of utter importance. And yet, for the second school year in a row, she made sure her disability stood out. Campbell did this presentation without me. I had no idea what she was going to say—but I always know how she feels: That a disability doesn’t make you deficient. That autism is “nothing to be ashamed of.” I’m proud of my daughter for sharing, but I’m equally proud of this school and these students. Not everyone applauds autism. But when we give disabled children the opportunity to lead— Inclusion can be taught. #actuallyautistic #spedteacher #autismteacher #disabilityinclusion #neurodiverse

The post showcases a viral TikTok-style video demonstrating a rapid shoelace-tying technique learned in fifth grade, where the creator's "slow-motion" attempt still baffles viewers, amassing over 72,000 views and 1,700 likes in hours. This method, involving a single bow-tying motion after initial crossings, streamlines traditional lacing by minimizing loops, as detailed in a 2015 Numberphile video by mathematician Matt Parker, which predates recent social media buzz. User replies reflect universal frustration with fast tutorials, drawing parallels to rushed workplace training, while one highlights the technique's orthopedic appeal for quick, secure knots in professional settings.

🥰I’m a big fan of including Littles at fancy family meals, at least for a short time! ✨Did you know that toddlers who were included in family mealtime on a consistent basis scored higher in pre-reading skills in kindergarten then their peers …and those same kids had higher reading scores in fifth grade! 🥂But regular family meal times don’t usually involve fancy glassware and the good china! Still, I love including toddlers and young children because we’re creating memories and I want them to be a part of that. 🤍For helping the tiniest babes enjoy being at the table a little longer, a few soft toys after they eat and fat crayons for toddlers to color on brown paper bags works great! For preschoolers, stickers are super fun, but save those for the older kids because stickers are very chokable! 🍽️This strategy also helps keep all of the adults at the table. Because if the toddlers get down right away, someone older has to leave the table to keep an eye them . 🎄Hope you’re having the most wonderful holiday week ! 🥰Melanie #melaniepotock #slpfeeding #feedingtherapy #pickyeaters #ashaigers #feedinglittles #originalidea
