RUThese were big pills to swallow...
1. Stop waiting for the "perfect" project. You have to give yourself permission to make something "bad." You have to make mistakes to figure out what actually looks good. If you spend all your time planning the perfect movie that will never have any problems, you’ll never actually hit the record button. Just go make something messy…you’ll get better every time.
2. In short films, action is king. Show us what’s happening rather than explaining it. In a short film, you don't have two hours to explain a character’s whole life story. Instead of having people sit around and talk about their feelings, show us the story through the camera and the action. Keep it moving! Shorts are best when focused on an event. Your audience will be way more into it, and it makes editing a lot easier.
3. Act like a pro (even if your "crew" is just your friends). Treat your "set" with respect, even if it’s just your backyard and your brother is holding the flashlight! When you take your work seriously, the quality actually goes up and people will be more excited to help you. You don’t need a Hollywood budget to call yourself a director, YOU ARE ONE!!
