what's a more fitting way to begin spring + aries + fire season (for an aries nature gal, no less) than by participating in a controlled burn to help our native plant species thrive?? ❤️‍🔥🌾 this was such a great experience. we cleared around 4.5 acres for this burn. thanks to the oakland county parks & rec team for teaching us the skills!

In 2023, wildfire smoke turned skies orange across Canada and beyond. In just 11 days, it was linked to an estimated 5,400 deaths in North America. This isn’t just a wildfire issue. It’s a public health issue.

Prescribed fire. Controlled burn. More people are becoming more familiar with these phrases and the important role these intentional fires can play in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Here’s a glimpse into the prescribed burn PLC and Firefly Land Management, LLC completed on Friday, March 6, at the future Bashavia Creek Preserve. The Preserve includes several open fields that PLC plans to manage as Piedmont prairie habitat. This fire-dependent natural community provides important early successional habitat and is one of the most endangered in the region. This burn will support the growth of native warm season grasses and fire-dependent herbaceous vegetation that once covered much of our landscapes, creating habitat for meadow birds like the Eastern Meadowlark and a wide variety of butterflies, bees, and other pollinators that thrive in sunny grasslands. Prescribed fire also helps recycle nutrients back into the soil, reduce invasive plant species, and prevent woody plants from taking over fields. These processes support stronger native plant communities and increase biodiversity across the landscape. We know that fire on the landscape can make some people uneasy. Prescribed burns are carefully planned and carried out by trained professionals under pre-determined and specific environmental conditions to keep the fire controlled and safe. They are an important land stewardship tool used by conservation organizations, scientists, and land managers across the country. We’re excited to share updates on the land’s progress after the burn. If you’re curious to see the results and learn more about how it works, we invite you to join us for a “Learn from the Burn Walkabout.” PLC’s Nature Preserve Manager, Mike, will host a walkabout through the recently burned area on Saturday, March 21 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. We’ll walk the land together and Mike will share the why and how behind the burn and answer any lingering questions you might have. Please join us! It's that time! If you see a huge plume of smoke in the Midwest this time of year, it's very likely a controlled or prescribed burn. While it might seem counterintuitive to start a fire to help a landscape, these managed fires serve several important functions, to include: • wildfire prevention • ecosystem rejuvenation • wildlife habitat improvement • invasive species and pest management No need to get too anxious thinking there's an emergency, but still please feel free to call the fire department - anyone conducting a burn should have alerted the local fire prevention authories, and they'll let you know the situation is managed!

Over the past few weeks in @amcan_fire Wildfire Wednesday series, they've talked about some of the less visible parts of wildfire preparedness — air quality, where to find reliable information, and how embers can travel ahead of a fire. Another important piece of preparedness happens much earlier: reducing hazardous fuels on the landscape or as Napa Firewiserefers to "land resilience projects". Many open spaces in American Canyon are dominated by fast-growing seasonal grasses — called “fine fuels” in the fire world. These fuels grow quickly in spring and dry out as summer approaches, creating continuous vegetation that can carry fire if ignited. Grazing helps manage those fuels early and consistently. It breaks up fuel continuity while supporting healthier open space over time — a practical, landscape-appropriate tool for City of American Canyon’s terrain and ecology. This video captures that work in action at Newell Open Space Preserve, part of a larger effort that treated over 400 acres across American Canyon. Wildfire preparedness happens through the right tools, in the right places, and strong local partnerships. Why do some buildings survive wildfires while others are lost? In the wildland/urban interface, hundreds of variables, from building materials to topography and ember exposure, influence whether a structure ignites in a wildfire. Researchers are leveraging artificial intelligence to pinpoint the variables that most strongly determine whether a structure ignites. Watch the video, then read the full article in NFPA Journal to learn more about how AI is shaping the future of wildfire resilience. www.nfpa.org/wildfireai

New Podcast🔥🔥🔥Prescribed Burns🔥🔥Because our landscapes evolved with fire, and these fire adapted communities are globally rare and critically endangered (with massive loss to our sand plains especially). If you work in land care in the Northeast, understanding fire isn’t optional it’s part of understanding the ecology you’re managing. Peace Love and Pollinators Photo Credit Dan Wilder
