For this week’s #fortheloveofashtanga we have Ardha Baddha Pasmottanasana (Bound Lotus Forward Fold). This can be practiced with a modification, for example Vrkasana (tree pose) and holding that for 5 breaths (with or without half lotus). Once the hip is more open and the knee points to the ground in half lotus then it is safe to fold. It is wise to exercise caution in this asana to avoid knee injury. Today on #fortheloveofashtanga we have everybody’s favourite wobble… Uthita Hasta Padangusthasana 🎉 I love it because it tests strength, flexibility and balance all at the same time! 🥰 Because of its difficulty it was originally included at the end of the primary series, after all the seated positions, and there was no holding the leg up for 5 breaths at the end (but where’s the fun in that! 😉😂). Over time it moved to the end of the standing sequence and is now one of the so called ‘gateway’ postures that some teachers want you to do competently before moving on in the series. If you practice with a teacher they might assist you by holding your heel for stability whilst you straighten the standing leg and lift the chest. If you are practicing on your own you can use a wall or the back of a chair to rest your foot on to work on this. Aim for a strong straight standing leg and a straight spine and don’t worry if, like me, you can’t always straighten the extended leg (some days are better than others - today was a really stiff day and I couldn’t extend or point my toe 🥴). Turning the chin and pulling that against the raised foot whilst grounding down the standing leg gives a whole body movement which helps the hips to open naturally. If you are new to this then it might help to break it down and work on building up the skills separately. You can hold the knee instead of the toe whilst you work on building strength in the standing leg, then move on to holding the toe with the knee bent and finally work towards straightening the leg. You can also extend the leg at the end for one count and increase it gradually until you can manage all 5 and don’t forget to smile 😃!
