ARBass don’t just randomly bite — their feeding habits change with the seasons. Understanding this is the difference between getting skunked and getting slammed. Save this post to help you in all seasons.
Spring:
As water temps rise, bass move shallow and feed aggressively to prepare for the spawn. Crawfish, bluegill, and anything that looks like easy protein gets crushed. Reaction baits and creature baits shine here because bass are territorial and hungry.
Summer:
Heat pushes bass deeper or into heavy cover during the day, but they still feed hard early morning and late evening. This is when topwater explosions, frogs, and fast-moving baitfish lures dominate. Midday, they’re more selective and hug structure.
Fall:
Pure feeding mode. Bass are chasing baitfish like shad nonstop to bulk up for winter. This is one of the best times for moving baits — crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swimbaits. They’ll travel farther to eat than any other season.
Winter:
Metabolism slows way down. Bass still eat, just less often and much slower. Smaller presentations and finesse techniques work best because they won’t waste energy chasing something fast.
Once you realize bass eat differently every season, lure choice starts making a whole lot more sense — and your catch rate jumps fast.
