Flash doesn't have to be scary (or harsh! 📸) If you’ve ever avoided using flash because you’re afraid of that direct "deer in the headlights" look, bounce flash is about to be your new best friend. It’s the easiest way to get soft, professional lighting in dark indoor spaces like wedding receptions! Here’s the breakdown: 1️⃣ Set flash to Manual: Start at 1/16 power. For a dark rooms with no windows or at night, set ISO to 1600. I usually use a shutter speed of 1/125 with aperture of f3.2 for most wedding receptions (15~20ft ceilings). For rooms with lower ceilings (less than 12ft) start with lower ISO like 800. 2️⃣ Aim the flash head: Aim at a white ceiling or wall and NEVER directly at your subject. 3️⃣ Take a test photo and dial in your exposure: • Too dark? Don't touch the flash. Bumping the power could effect the flash's recycle time. Instead, increase ISO gradually until you have your desired exposure level keeping in mind that our goal is to keep ISO as low was possible. • Still dark? Lower your aperture! • Too bright? Drop your flash power and/or ISO. • What about shutter speed? Flash lasts thousands of a second. By changing SS from 1/200 to 1/100, youre not affecting the flash's strength per se but you are introducing more ambient light to your image by lowering shutter speed so your flash is competing more with the ambient light. I normally keep my shutter to 1/125 when shooting indoors because background lightbulbs can look weird or half lit if the SS is too high so I'll leave it alone and adjust my other exposure settings around this. 4️⃣ Let physics do the work! 💡 By bouncing the light, you’re turning a tiny bulb into a massive, soft light source by using the wall or ceiling as a reflective diffuser! The more distance, the larger the light, and with a bigger light, means softer lighting. However, if the ceiling is too high, isnt a whitish color, or the subject is too far, bounce flash might not be as ideal. Bouncing light doesnt really offer much control in terms of shaping the light but works fantastic as a quick and easy soft fill light! #photographytips #flashphotography #weddingphotographer #learnphotography #photographyhacks

The window for shots like this is always smaller than it looks. Just after sunset when there is enough color in the sky and the ocean is dark enough to light up the water with a flash. The moment is fleeting, most days I leave without a keeper, but thats what makes it so addicting to keep coming back. 📸Flash doesn’t have to be scary. And it definitely doesn’t have to be harsh. Most people struggle with flash because they try to overpower the room and their flash power instead of working with their ISO. Here’s the combo we keep coming back to: • Flash power around 1/16 • Zoomed light (105mm) • Slight forward tilt • ISO up (around 800) That’s it. Soft. Controlled. Cinematic fill light that still feels like the moment yet adds incredible quality with soft lighting. If flash has been sitting in your bag collecting dust….this is your sign ✨ Save this for later + try it at your next shoot.🪩🧚🏼✨ As always, we are happy to answer anything in the comments below!! I hope this is the year you master your flash!! #flashphotos #weddingphotographer #flashphotography #photographertips #weddingeducation

Wait for the end 😅 😊   Awesome new AdoramaTV episode from @thegavinhoey out now! Click the link in our bio to check it out!   📸 From Gavin:    “What matters more in portrait photography, the gear you use or the character you capture? Without the right gear your creativity might be limited, but without any character do you even have a photo worth sharing?    In this outdoor portrait session, I put that theory to the test by photographing Rob, a model with bags of personality, using a simple one flash setup in his own garden.   We begin by building the image up from a technical foundation. We balance the flash power of a @flashpointlighting XPLOR 400 Pro strobe with existing ambient light to create a strong but natural look. With bright sunlight in the mix, we add an ND32 filter instead of high-speed sync. It’s a simple trick that gives us control over the ambient light, the potential to use the full power of the flash but the shallow depth of field look that keeps the focus beautifully soft in the background.    Once the lighting is set, the real storytelling begins. From clever use of props like a cane (and even a surprise appearance from Toni the chicken!) to tips for helping your model express emotion on camera, this session is packed with practical advice for photographers who want to move beyond sterile setups and start adding life to their portraits.” Model: @modelretrorob   Gear used ⤵️   ⚫️ OM SYSTEM OM-1 ⚫️ Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.2 ⚫️ Flashpoint Xplor400 Pro ⚫️ Flashpoint R2 Pro Transmitter ⚫️ Sekonic L-308 Flash Meter ⚫️ Neutral Density Filter ⚫️ Glow EZ Lock 24x36” Quick Rectangle Softbox   Click the link in our bio to watch the full video! . . . #createnomatterwhat #photographytips #photographylovers #flashphotography #flashphotographer #flashpointlighting #flashpoint #strobelighting

Stop blasting flash straight at your subject. 🚫⚡ That’s how you get flat, harsh lighting. Instead — bounce it. When you point your flash at the ceiling, you’re turning that entire ceiling into a giant softbox. Bigger light source = softer, more flattering light. But here’s the catch 👇 If you bounce straight up, you might get shadows in the eyes — especially with deep-set eyes. So I prefer this 👇 Tilt and swivel to about 45° behind me. That bounce gives beautiful, natural light with better catchlights and fewer shadows. You can also bounce off a side wall if it’s white — that gives you soft but directional light. ⚠️ Important: White ceilings = perfect. Colored ceilings = color cast nightmare. In that case? Go off-camera. I’m using the V1 Pro here — but this works with any on-camera flash. Want to see examples? Drop a ⚡ below. And send this to that friend who still nukes people with direct flash 😌 #FlashPhotography #LightingTips #PhotoTechniques
