I understand why people have strong feelings about animals in captivity, and I agree that it’s important to be informed and critical about animal welfare. That said, it’s also important to separate broader ethical debates about captivity from what actually happened in this specific moment.
In this case, I was outside of the enclosure, the sea lion was not trained, cued, or asked to interact, and it was free to move away at any time. Animal care staff were present and aware of what I was doing. If the behavior were stressful or disruptive, staff would have intervened immediately — that’s literally part of their job.
One easily researchable fact:
Accredited zoos and aquariums (such as those accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, AZA) are required to monitor animals continuously for stress signals and to provide environmental enrichment, which often includes visual novelty. Sea lions, in particular, are highly visual, curious animals, and enrichment guidelines explicitly include observing movement and novel stimuli. This isn’t controversial — it’s standard practice and well documented.
Another important point people can look up:
Signs of stress in sea lions include repetitive pacing, avoidance, frantic swimming, prolonged distress vocalizations, or refusal to participate in normal behaviors. None of those were present here. Passive observation of something new is not considered harmful stimulation, especially when the animal has full choice to disengage.
There are absolutely valid conversations to be had about captivity as a system — but equating all captive environments or any visual stimulus with abuse oversimplifies animal welfare science and ignores how professional facilities actually operate.
I care about animals, I was mindful of my surroundings, and the situation was supervised by trained professionals whose responsibility is the well-being of the animals in their care. Disagreement about captivity doesn’t automatically mean harm occurred in this moment.

For a few days I was hosted by the wonderful people at @pandoverse in Kullu Valley, India
In fact I spent a few weeks there in March 2026 learning and flowing with some fantastic individuals. I’ve taken home with me many new tips and tricks that I look forward to spreading into my future workshops 🎪
