Fast alle unterirdischen Hohlräume sind ausgebrochen – rund eine Million Tonnen Gestein wurden seit Ende 2023 bewegt. Das neue Kavernensystem verdoppelt das Speichervolumen auf 400.000 Kubikmeter und ermöglicht bis zu acht Stunden Turbinenbetrieb. Die Leistung steigt um zehn Prozent, die Landschaft bleibt dank der unterirdischen Bauweise nahezu unberührt. Am Samstag, 11. Oktober 2025, lädt EnBW zum Tag der offenen Baustelle am Rudolf-Fettweis-Werk ein. Von 10 bis 17 Uhr können Besucher die Baustelle besichtigen, sich auf einem Rundgang informieren und exklusive Einblicke in das neue Kraftwerk gewinnen. Der Zugang ist nur mit ÖPNV, zu Fuß oder per Fahrrad möglich, festes Schuhwerk ist für den Fußweg von etwa 1,5 km erforderlich.
