Tom Hanks agreed to star in Forrest Gump (1994) after reading the script for about an hour and a half. One of his main conditions was that the story stay historically believable and grounded, even with its fictional elements. During production, Robert Zemeckis ran into major budget problems when Paramount Pictures cut around $10 million from the budget. The studio pushed him to remove expensive scenes, including parts involving the shrimp boat and the Vietnam sequences. Zemeckis fought hard to keep those moments because they were essential to the story. To help save the film’s scale, both he and Hanks agreed to give up part of their upfront salaries in exchange for a percentage of the profits, a risky move that paid off later when Hanks reportedly earned around $70 million from the film’s success. One of the most famous parts of the movie, Forrest’s long running journey across America, was almost cut as well. Zemeckis officially agreed to reduce it but quietly filmed much of the sequence anyway, with some behind the scenes support from production executive Michelle Manning. Many of the wide running shots were done by Tom Hanks’ younger brother, Jim Hanks, because he could copy Forrest’s unique, slightly awkward running style better than other stunt doubles. When the studio finally saw the footage, they approved the scenes after realizing how important they were to the film. One iconic shot, filmed in Monument Valley, wasn’t funded by the studio at all, so Hanks and Zemeckis ended up paying for it themselves to make sure the moment stayed in the movie.

Jenny says in the movie that the doctors do not know what the virus is, and that they can do nothing about it. This information, combined with the time period in which she got sick (early 80s), coincided with the HIV epidemic, so many people assumed Jenny died of AIDS. This is clearly the implication in the movie, and even Robin Wright (who played Jenny) stated Jenny's death from HIV / AIDS as an uncontroversial aspect of her character's storyline during an October 2024 interview with Stephen Colbert. However, in the sequel book "Gump & Co" the author mentions that Jenny dies from Hepatitis C, contracted as a former drug addict in the 70s. Hepatitis C was not isolated and named until 1989. It was often fatal until effective treatments were developed during the 2000s. The disease, in fact, had been around for an extremely long time, but bundled in with diagnoses of the single illness of hepatitis.
