Crude Oil Distillation Crude oil distillation is the process of separating crude oil into different useful products based on their boiling points. It is done in a refinery using a Fractional Distillation Column. Crude oil is a natural mixture of hydrocarbons found underground. After refining, it gives petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG, etc. Process of Fractional Distillation 1️⃣ Heating Crude oil is heated to about 350–400°C in a furnace. It becomes a mixture of liquid and vapor. 2️⃣ Entering Distillation Column The hot mixture enters a tall fractionating column. The column is hot at the bottom and cool at the top. 3️⃣ Separation by Boiling Point Different hydrocarbons condense at different temperatures. Heavy fractions condense at the bottom. Light fractions rise and condense at the top. Crude oil is first heated in a furnace at the bottom of the system until it becomes a mixture of hot vapors and liquids. This mixture enters the tall distillation column. Inside the column, the temperature is highest at the bottom and decreases toward the top. As the vapors rise through the column, different hydrocarbons condense at different levels according to their boiling points. Each fraction is collected through pipes at specific heights. Products obtained from the column: 1. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) - Collected at the top of the column where temperatures are below 40°C. It is used as cooking gas and fuel. 2. Naphtha - Condenses around 70-100°C and is used in petrochemical industries and for making gasoline. 3. Gasoline (Petrol) - Forms between about 40-150°C and is mainly used as fuel for cars and motorcycles. 4. Kerosene - Condenses between 150-250°C and is used as jet fuel and for heating. 5. Diesel - Collected at 250-350°C and used as fuel for trucks, buses, and generators. 6. Heavy Gas Oil - Forms between 350-450°C and is used for ships and industrial fuels. 7. Residue (Bitumen/Heavy Oil) - The heaviest fraction that remains at the bottom above 450°C and is used for road construction and heavy industrial applications. This fractional distillation process is essential in petroleum refineries because it separates crude oil into valuable fuels and raw materials used in transportation, energy production, and manufacturing industries.
