KOI get it. You’re bootstrapping, you’re scrappy, you want to figure it out yourself. I did the same thing. Here’s what I learned the hard way so you don’t have to:
🍒Lesson 1: Your brand isn’t about what YOU like. I created a brand that felt true to my personal aesthetic, then wondered why I wasn’t attracting clients. Your brand should reflect your ideal client’s aspirations, not your Pinterest board. Those are often different things.
🍒Lesson 2: Overthinking the logo wastes time that should go to messaging. I spent three weeks agonizing over logo concepts when my website copy was vague and my service offerings were unclear. Get your positioning and messaging nailed first. The visuals will flow easier once you know exactly what you’re saying.
🍒Lesson 3: Free fonts and stock graphics make your brand forgettable. When everyone has access to the same resources, everyone starts looking the same. I couldn’t figure out why my brand didn’t stand out until I realized I was pulling from the exact same libraries as my competitors.
🍒Lesson 4: You’ll rebrand sooner than you think. I thought my DIY brand would last a few years. I redid it after eight months because I’d already outgrown it. If I’d known that upfront, I would’ve either invested properly from the start or leaned into a scrappier placeholder approach without the perfectionism.
🍒Lesson 5: Inconsistency kills trust faster than an imperfect brand. I kept tweaking things because I was never quite satisfied. Different colors on Instagram vs. my website, fonts that changed every month, a logo I kept “improving.” That constant flux made me look unstable, not thoughtful.
🍒Lesson 6: DIY works if you’re willing to actually learn design principles. Throwing things together in Canva without understanding hierarchy, balance, contrast, and spacing results in something that looks amateur. Either commit to learning those foundations or hire someone who already has them.
🍒Lesson 7: Your time has a dollar value. I spent 60+ hours on my DIY brand. At my current rate, that’s $6,000 worth of time I could’ve spent on client work or business development. The “free” route wasn’t actually free.
