Moorea (Bora Bora’s sister island) is arguably just as beautiful and MUCH more affordable to visit👇 I’ve found myself visiting this insanely gorgeous island every single year because I love it so much. I’ve been saying this for a while now but Moorea is such an underrated place to visit! Think Kauai vibes…but even better! Imagine green mountains, turquoise ocean water clearer than pool water & tons of sea life. There’s nothing like swimming in Moorea’s waters, seeing humpback whales & turtles, and admiring the combination of the jungle & mountains in the background. Tips on visiting Moorea: ✈️ you will first fly into Tahiti (PPT) airport, direct from LAX or SFO. You can get there on points with Air Tahiti Nui, Air France, United or Delta. On a budget? Look for French Bee from SFO. ⛴️ You can take either the Terevau Ferry or Aremiti Express Ferry to Moorea for much cheaper than flying. You can purchase tickets at the ferry terminal (a $20 USD taxi ride from the Tahiti airport). It’s no surprise this destination is at the top of everyone’s bucket list, and is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations on the planet—it’s where we chose to honeymoon, too! To keep it a *little* more affordable, I’d recommend spending the bulk of your time in Moorea (they have a bunch of affordable AirBnB style places, where you can swim with humpbacks (in season), hike, and have a lower key experience, and then cap your trip off with a few days at @stregisborabora , where you’ll get that classic, romantic, & luxury experience French Polynesia is known for. In Moorea, you can swim with whales… but you should NOT freedive with them. 🐋 Moorea is one of the most magical places in the world to see humpback whales, but this is not a performance, and the whales are not there for us. In French Polynesia, whale encounters are regulated: operators need permits, groups are limited, boats must keep distance, and guests enter the water only with licensed guides. Freediving down toward the whales is not allowed because it can look like pressure or pursuit. It may disturb their natural behaviour, especially mothers with calves, who are there to rest, nurse, and protect their babies. The most respectful thing you can do is stay calm at the surface, move slowly, listen to your guide, and let the whale decide if the moment happens. Because the best whale encounter is never the one we force.
