ISKobe was my favorite shot maker of all time because he knew how to adjust his shooting release to avoid shot blockers. There was never a shot where Kobe didn’t feel comfortable shooting. He mastered every angle, every footwork pattern, and every type of contest. Whether it was a fadeaway over two defenders, a turnaround off one leg, or a tough mid-post jumper, he had the confidence and skill to make it look routine. What made him special wasn’t just the difficulty of his shots—it was how intentional every movement was. He trained those exact shots over and over so they felt like layups, even when they looked impossible to everyone else.
Just look at this throwback clip in his intense duel versus a young LeBron James. Kobe had the iso on the right side of the court and started off by backing his defender down until he got closer to the paint. On the last bump, he immediately spins towards the baseline and fades for the turnaround jumper over the great contest. Really focus on Kobe’s release point on the turnaround jumper. As Kobe jumps and sets the fadeaway, he doesn’t dip the ball or double clutch. Instead, he elevates and keeps the ball high over his head, and quickly releases it at the peak point while having great arc on the ball. This high release point and high arc made it extremely difficult for the defender to try and block, no matter how high he jumped.
That’s why it’s so important to practice shooting from different release points while shooting shots. You never know when you will need to keep the ball high on a great contest.
