Never fear, because growing them in pots is easy to do.
You will find nearly all fruit trees will have a dwarf variety which are perfect for growing in pots.
Do a little research (google) before you head to the nursery to know what to look for.
Make sure to use a premium potting mix and be sure to keep them watered on a regular schedule as soil in pots will dry out quicker than in the ground.
With a little care and maintenance you’ll be enjoying yummy fruit in no time. 👌🏽

ALBanana plants are the EASIEST tropical fruits to grow, and in my opinion, the most beautiful!🌿🍌 With their massive leaves and the potential for hundreds of bananas (or at least a few dozen if I’m lucky in my colder climate), they’re a must for tropical plant lovers.
Did you know there are thousands of banana varieties, but here are my favorites for cold climates:
1️⃣ Musa Basjoo
This one’s a winner for cold tolerance! The fruit is inedible (it’s known as the Japanese fiber banana), but its cold-hardy rhizomes make it perfect for New York’s winters. Mulch them well, and you can grow them almost anywhere.
2️⃣ Blue Java Banana
While the bananas aren’t truly blue, they do have a light, frosty appearance and taste way better than the typical grocery store Cavendish. Cold-tolerant, too! I’ve had these bounce back even after multiple hard freezes in South Carolina, and they overwinter just fine in my NY garage.
3️⃣ Musa Sikkimensis
This variety is your cold-weather hero! It thrives in low temps and even survived a full winter in my garage, where it’s barely above freezing.
4️⃣Ensete Maurelli
While it doesn’t produce bananas, the stunning red-tinged leaves make it a showstopper! Plus, it’s hardy enough to handle frost and freezing temperatures thanks to its thick trunk.

Pruning your apple tree? One of the biggest mistakes I see is letting dual leaders (two competing main stems) develop. This weakens the tree, causes structural issues, and can lead to breakages under heavy fruit loads.
Beginner gardeners panic about cutting back the main stem on young fruit trees but it’s ESSENTIAL!
But don’t worry—here’s how to fix it!
✅ Step 1: Identify the strongest, most upright central leader. This is the one you want to keep.
✅ Step 2: Look for competing vertical stems—these need to go! Use sharp, clean secateurs to remove the weaker one at the base.
✅ Step 3: Make clean, angled cuts just above a healthy outward-facing bud to encourage open growth.
✅ Step 4: Keep an eye on regrowth—apple trees love to send up new shoots, so check back in summer and winter to maintain good structure.
A single strong leader = a healthier, more productive tree with better airflow and balance! 🍎🌳
