ST❌📚 Booked & Banned News – April 2, 2025 📚#❌
Big Booked & Banned News this week: The Trump administration has gutted the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), On Monday, the agency’s about 75 person staff were all informed that they would be placed on paid administrative leave for up to 90 days, effective immediately. Federal grants that fund libraries and museums across the country are also being cut by the Department Trump administration. This follows a string of executive orders eliminating agencies Trump deems “unnecessary” – apparently, literacy and knowledge is on the chopping block now. Wonder why?!
In Iowa, a judge has once again blocked the state’s book ban, giving educators a much-needed sigh of relief (and some actual books to teach with). Meanwhile, Texas wants even more oversight of school libraries because, you know, those librarians have just been way too powerful.
And in North Carolina, a new bill aims to ban books on gender and sexuality for young students—while also making it illegal for teachers to provide them. Yes, nothing says “pro-education” like threatening teachers with prosecution.
