KOHere’s what we know about bloat (GDV).
It’s life-threatening.
Large breeds like Golden Retrievers are genetically predisposed.
And feeding practices matter.
In the Purdue University GDV study (Glickman et al.):
• Dogs fed one large meal per day had higher risk.
• Dry food diets were associated with increased risk.
• Adding water to dry food before feeding was associated with increased GDV risk.
• Elevated feeders increased risk in large and giant breeds.
Now pause.
Kibble is extruded and dehydrated.
It’s designed to expand when moisture hits it.
It’s uniform.
It’s easy to inhale.
So what do we do?
We soak it.
We mash it.
We buy slow feeder bowls because the dog “eats too fast.”
But rapid eating and air swallowing are already known risk factors for bloat.
If the food structure encourages inhaling, and then we manipulate it with water and obstacles — we’re still working around the wrong problem.
Raw feeding changes the mechanics of eating:
• Natural moisture
• Structural resistance
• Required chewing
• Slower mechanical consumption
Raw is not a magical immunity.
Bloat is multifactorial.
Genetics, stress, meal size, and temperament all play a role.
But pretending all feeding models behave the same in the stomach isn’t accurate.
If you own a large breed, you don’t need fear.
You need physiology.

Gastrodilitation/Volvulus:
This is when the stomach fills with gas and then twists on itself which cuts off blood supply to the stomach and causes the dog to go into shock and will lead to death if not treated quickly with surgery.
Signs of GDV:
• Unproductive retching (trying to vomit, nothing coming up)
• Distended/tight abdomen
• Restlessness, pacing, can’t get comfortable
• Drooling
• Weakness or collapse
Certain dogs are higher risk, namely breeds with deeper chest cavities but it can happen to any dog. This patient is a doodle and it’s a great reminder for owners of large breed poodle mixes - both parents are breeds at risk so doodles are too.
This is not a “wait and see” situation. If you’re even thinking it could be GDV → go to the ER or call a vet immediately!
