For this map, I visualized how walkable New York City - Manhattan, is from each subway station using open GTFS data and Python. Using Pandana for network-based accessibility, I built color-graded isochrone maps for the accessibility range of every station in the NYC subway system, marking each point available within the same amount of time with the same color. Each frame in the animation adds 5 seconds of walk time, showing how accessible the surrounding area becomes as time increases. Such walkability maps, particularly useful for urban planning, quickly highlight accessibility gaps and redundancies as well as the spatial reach of public transit infrastructure.
