Fire alarms are meant to protect life and property, but for Nicollet Young OT ’26, who is autistic and has ADHD, the alarms caused anxiety. Instead of amplifying her anxiety, she took action with a capstone project researching sensory rooms and a presentation with a detailed proposal to establish rooms on Pacific’s campuses. These rooms will have lasting benefits for Pacific students for years to come. Our first sensory room in the Tran Library on the Forest Grove Campus opened in February. Brotherton’s silent spaces are perfect for full-focus mode with minimal distractions 💜 Edward Boyle Library: From accessible rooms to low-sensory pods and silent study areas, Eddy B has plenty of student spaces designed to reduce noise, bright lights and sensory overload 💜 Quiet Room (Disability Services): The quiet room is perfect if you need time to decompress. No booking is needed, just ask at the front desk or show a card at Reception without having to say a word. 💜 Fuse cafe: A hidden gem tucked inside the School of Chemical and Process Engineering. It’s spacious, peaceful and the perfect escape from busy lecture halls and the SU. ✨ Learning Beyond the Classroom ✨ What happens when a University of Southern Indiana classroom meets the reflective spaces of New Harmony? Earlier this week, a group of graduate social work students from USI's course SOW664 Crisis Intervention and Trauma Informed Care visited the Atheneum in New Harmony as part of a collaborative experience between USI professor Summer Wilderman, Historic New Harmony, and trained labyrinth facilitator James Taylor-Caudill. Together, they designed an immersive learning opportunity focused on using labyrinths as trauma‑informed tools—bringing theory, practice, and place together in meaningful ways. Through guided exploration and quiet reflection, students experienced how movement, mindfulness, and environment can support healing and nervous system regulation—insights they can carry into their future work with individuals and communities. This visit highlights what’s possible when faculty partner with Historic New Harmony to create customized, place‑based learning experiences that deepen student engagement and understanding. 🎓 USI faculty: Interested in bringing your course concepts to life through history, reflection, or experiential learning?
