#GarWeek RIVER MONSTERS!!! What’s it like catching (and releasing) GIANT Alligator Gars with @thegarlab team and partners? The team sets special large nets that trap large gars. When the team sees a fish in the net, they quickly secure the gar (wrapping it in the net like a burrito) and bring it on board and to shore. Once on shore, the fish is weighed, several length measurements taken, fin tissue clipped, and tagged for future ID. The process takes 5-7 minutes, and the fish is released safely. Gars are air-breathers, so they can be out of water for brief periods without harm to the fish. Research is carried out by professionals with special permits. Meet our Gar Squad: Garbanzo, Garlic, Garnet, Gardenia, and… Geoff! 😆 Gars are “living fossils” that have been swimming the planet for over 150 million years, and have barely changed since the age of dinosaurs! The longnose and spotted gars in the Ancestral Fishes exhibit are target trained to swim to a floating hoop at feeding time, making sure each one gets the right amount of food and some extra enrichment.
