INRadio-controlled (RC) cars first appeared in the 1960s, when small-scale electric motors and radio transmitters became affordable for hobbyists. The earliest models were tethered or crude in control, but by the late ’60s and early ’70s, companies like Elettronica Giocattoli in Italy and later Mardave in the UK produced fully wireless RC cars.
The hobby exploded in the 1980s, with brands like Tamiya, Kyosho, and Traxxas introducing off-road buggies, customizable kits, and faster electric motors. Nitro-powered RC cars soon followed, giving enthusiasts gas-engine speed and endurance. By the 1990s, RC racing leagues and off-road tracks brought structure to the hobby, while casual backyard users kept experimenting with speed runs and stunts.
Today, RC cars range from entry-level toys to professional racing machines capable of speeds over 100 mph. They’re used not only for fun, but also for robotics competitions and even military training exercises where small vehicles simulate drones or autonomous scouts.
