JEUp, up, and away in the Cessna Citation V jet! ✈️
I got some single-pilot flying in recently (no crew). Our airport is a very busy GA (general aviation) airport which means more traffic in the air. So pilots have to be extra vigilant to stay away from other aircraft, especially on takeoff. This was a busy day with lots of low traffic around when I took off. But thanks to the TCAS system, avionics, and scanning outside, any sort of issue was easily avoided.

PIIt’s completely natural to feel uneasy about flying after a tragic event like the recent Air India crash. The flood of media coverage — often sensational, speculative, and lacking sensitivity — only deepens that anxiety.Even more troubling is the circulation of graphic images and videos, amplified by self-proclaimed “experts” chasing views rather than showing compassion. Let’s not forget: real lives were lost, and real families are mourning. Respect and dignity must come first.
What rarely makes the headlines, however, is the bigger picture:
🌍 Global daily flights: ~100,000 to 120,000 commercial, cargo, and general aviation flights
• ✈️ Commercial passenger flights alone: ~70,000–90,000 daily
• 👥 Passengers flown: Around 4.5 to 5 million people per day
• 🗓️ Annually: Over 35 million flights take place around the world
Last week I was on a flight , Tommorow I am flying again despite the heavy cloud of grief, we boarded with calm, not fear because aviation is built on precision, training, and the relentless commitment of thousands of professionals on the ground and in the air. Let’s not allow fear or misinformation to define our perspective. Let’s honour those we lost with dignity — and by continuing to trust in what remains one of the safest ways to travel.
Flying is safe , Fly with confidence.

If you’re new here, hey we’re Erin & Paul👋👋 we’re a husband-and-wife duo who fell in love with flying, travel, and the freedom that comes from chasing new adventures and unique experiences together. Based in Phoenix, AZ, we started documenting our journey as student pilots, sharing the real, unpolished process of earning our licenses and ratings. That story has brought us to where we are now: we’ve converted our plane Tina into being a modular “Camper Plane” - an experimental aircraft designed to take us off-grid for days at a time. Our mission in building this plane, in this way, is to truly enable us to travel full time and showcase all the US has to offer on and off the runway. We are looking forward to highlighting the top unique experiences on and just off airports in each state, with the goal and hope to stimulate the growth of general aviation in the US and inspire others to live a life less typical.

MA1. ADS-B receiver (Stratus / Garmin GDL 50 / Sentry-type units)
This is one of those upgrades that completely changes how you see the sky. Real-time traffic helps you spot and avoid aircraft you’d otherwise never know were there, and live weather—radar, METARs, and TFRs—gives you a level of situational awareness that makes cross-country flying much more confident and efficient.
Once you’ve flown with ADS-B IN integrated into your iPad, going back without it feels like flying partially blind.
2. Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headset (Bose A20/A30, Lightspeed Zulu series) –
A high-quality ANR headset is one of the biggest comfort upgrades you can make in aviation. It reduces fatigue dramatically on longer flights by cutting out engine noise and wind rumble, while also making radio calls much clearer and less mentally exhausting.
It’s the kind of gear you don’t experiment with if it works well, you stick with it and replace it with the same thing every time without hesitation.
3. iPad with ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot + solid kneeboard setup
This is basically your cockpit brain in modern form. With charts, moving maps, approach plates, weather, and flight planning all in one place, it streamlines everything from preflight planning to in-flight decision-making.
Paired with a good mount and backup battery, it becomes one of the most relied-upon tools in general aviation, especially on cross-country flights where workload management really matters.
4. High-quality aviation flashlights (preferably red/white or multi-mode LED)
A good flashlight is one of those underrated but essential cockpit tools, especially for night or IFR operations.
During night flying, they’re critical for preflight inspections, cockpit organization, and emergency readiness. In IFR conditions, especially at night, a strong flashlight becomes even more important for visually checking for icing on the wings, struts, and control surfaces during flight when conditions allow a quick look.
A reliable light with a red mode also helps preserve night vision while still giving you enough visibility to stay aware and safe.

Starlink surprised thousands of pilots overnight with a huge price hike on the most used plan by General Aviation pilots. They limited their coveted $65/mo plan to 87 knots of speed (100mph), making it incompatible with most single-engine planes these days.
For it to work over that speed, pilots will now have more than triple: $250/mo. And the data limit went down from 50 to 20GB.

RUOn October 8, 2020, a Cessna 414 (N8132Q) was substantially damaged during a rejected takeoff at North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport in West Palm Beach, Florida. After an uneventful taxi and run-up, the pilot initiated the takeoff. As the aircraft accelerated down the runway, both the pilot and copilot attempted to pull back on the control yoke to rotate, but the controls would not move.
Realizing the airplane would not lift off and the end of the runway was approaching, the copilot aborted the takeoff by pulling the throttles to idle and applying maximum braking. The airplane overran the runway, continued through grass and mud, struck a dirt mound, and came to rest partially submerged in a marshy area. All seven occupants on board sustained serious injuries.
A postaccident examination revealed no mechanical failures in the elevator control system. Investigators found the flight control lock on the cockpit floor near the rudder pedals. Video footage of the airplane taxiing showed the elevator positioned similarly to how it would appear if the control lock were still installed. Investigators concluded that the control lock was likely left in place and that a proper flight control check before takeoff was not performed.
