What we see on a map is not always an exact representation of reality. Most world maps use the Mercator projection, which preserves direction for navigation but distorts size and distance especially as we move away from the equator. In this image, two distances are compared one across Africa and one across Russia. Although one appears shorter on the map, it is actually longer in reality, showing how visual perception can differ from true measurements on Earth. #geography #earth #facts #nature #knowledge

A satellite map zooms into the British Isles as GEO FACTSZONE breaks down one of the most common geographic mix-ups. The video starts by highlighting England in purple and explains that 90% of people don’t understand the difference between England, Great Britain, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles. England is just one country, located on the larger island to the right, covering the southern and central portion of that landmass. The animation then defines the key terms using color-coded maps. Great Britain is the larger island on the right that contains three countries: Scotland at the top, England below it, and Wales on the left side. Ireland is the island on the left, split into two parts — Northern Ireland in the north, and the Republic of Ireland making up the southern portion. When you combine England, Scotland, and Wales, you get Great Britain. The British Isles is the name for the whole region, including both main islands and all the smaller surrounding islands. The final distinction covers the United Kingdom, or UK. When you take Great Britain and add Northern Ireland, it becomes the United Kingdom. The video clarifies that the UK is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. London acts as the capital city for the entire UK. The animation uses a crown graphic to show how Great Britain historically formed a huge empire, while reinforcing that each name refers to a different political or geographic area, not interchangeable terms. 😱The Crazy Plan to Drain the Mediterranean Sea!! CONTEXT: In the 1920s, a radical geopolitical and engineering proposal known as Atlantropa aimed to completely transform the Mediterranean region. German architect Herman Sörgel proposed building a series of massive dams to cut the Mediterranean Sea off from the Atlantic Ocean at the Strait of Gibraltar. This dam, nearly 900 meters tall, would stop ocean water from flowing in. Because the Mediterranean naturally loses more water through evaporation than it gains from rivers, blocking the Atlantic would cause the sea to slowly shrink over decades. Additional mega-dams were planned at the Dardanelles to block the Black Sea and between Sicily and Tunisia to divide the basin. Water levels were projected to drop: 100 meters in the western Mediterranean 200 meters in the eastern Mediterranean This would expose millions of square kilometers of seabed, creating new farmland, land bridges, and even new cities. The project promised hydroelectric power, economic expansion, and a geopolitical union of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Although never built, Atlantropa remains one of the most ambitious and controversial mega-engineering ideas in modern history — a plan that could have permanently reshaped three continents.
