On July 17, 1917, George V made a dramatic decision that changed royal history forever. During World War I, the British royal family carried a German dynasty name: House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. At a time when Britain was fighting Germany, public anger was risingโ€”especially as Gotha bombers attacked London. To distance the monarchy from Germany, the King issued a royal proclamation and renamed the dynasty after Windsor Castle. That single decision created the royal name we still know today: the House of Windsor. #RoyalHistory #BritishMonarchy #HouseOfWindsor #KingGeorgeV #HistoryFacts

Are the British royals actually German? ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง During World War I, King George V faced a major problem: the royal familyโ€™s official name was Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a German dynasty name. At a time when Britain was fighting Germany, this caused public outrage. In 1917, the king made a historic decision: he changed the royal familyโ€™s name to Windsor, inspired by Windsor Castle. This is how the modern House of Windsor was born. History sometimes hides the most surprising twists. #History #RoyalFamily #BritishHistory #HouseOfWindsor #KingGeorgeV RoyalSecrets WorldWar1 EuropeanHistory HistoryShorts DidYouKnow

King George III and Queen Charlotte had 15 children, creating one of the largest royal families in European history. Yet despite so many princes and princesses, very few produced heirs. The future of the British monarchy ultimately passed to Queen Victoria, the granddaughter of George III. This royal family story shaped the future of Britain and Europe. #HistoryShorts #RoyalFamily #KingGeorgeIII #QueenVictoria #BritishHistory RoyalHistory EuropeanHistory HistoryFacts DidYouKnow HistoryTok

KING GEORGE V George V was the King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 1910 to 1936. His reign was marked by World War I where he became a symbol of national unity and steadfastness. In 1917 he changed the royal house name to the House of Windsor to distance the monarchy from its German roots. He was also the first monarch to deliver a Christmas broadcast to the nation establishing a tradition that continues today. Known for his disciplined nature and his passion for stamp collecting he modernized the image of the monarchy for a new era. . #king #wwi #england #royality #unitedkindom

Frederick, Duke of York, was the second son of George III and Queen Charlotte, and very much the spare in a rapidly growing royal family. Unlike his elder brother, he was pushed towards a military career and eventually became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. His early campaigns, particularly in the Low Countries during the French Revolutionary Wars, were widely seen as failures and made him a figure of public ridicule. His reputation never fully recovered, but it was a later scandal that caused the real damage. In 1809, his former mistress Mary Anne Clarke was accused of using her connection to Frederick to sell army commissions and promotions. The allegations led to a parliamentary inquiry and became a national scandal. Frederick denied personal involvement, but the damage was done and he was forced to resign his position as Commander-in-Chief in disgrace. Despite this, he quietly returned to the role a few years later, a sign of both royal protection and the lack of better alternatives. His personal life was no more successful. His marriage to Princess Frederica of Prussia broke down, and they lived largely separate lives. He died with no legitimate children. Next up in the series of royal baby boomers is... During a public appearance in the 1940s, King George VI reportedly made a brief, good-natured misstep when he accidentally offered a military-style salute to the crowdโ€”a gesture typically reserved for service members rather than monarchs. Known for his shyness and earnest demeanor, the King quickly realized the breach of protocol and was discreetly corrected by an aide, prompting him to adjust his posture with a touch of embarrassed charm. The small moment humanized the monarch, highlighting both the formality of royal etiquette and George VIโ€™s sincere, occasionally awkward efforts to uphold tradition while connecting with the public during a time when morale and symbolism mattered deeply.

They Never Told You The King Saluted The Wrong Crowd You've probably seen it done by presidents and celebrities alike โ€“ a dignified salute to honor those who serve. But there's a famous instance where this tradition was hilariously botched by none other than the British monarch himself. During a public appearance in the 1940s, King George VI made a brief misstep by offering a military-style salute to the crowd, a gesture typically reserved for service members rather than monarchs. Corrected by an aide, the King adjusted his posture with a touch of embarrassed charm, humanizing the monarch in the process. This small moment highlighted the formality of royal etiquette and George VI's sincere efforts to connect with the public, demonstrating the importance of symbolism during a time when morale mattered deeply.

The King Who Went Mad and Attacked His Own Court. He was the King of Britain. He commanded an empire that stretched across continents. He was, by every measure of the era, the most powerful man in the world. And then, one evening, he stopped his royal carriage, stepped outside, walked to an oak tree, and shook its branches โ€” because he believed he was greeting the King of Prussia. King George IIIโ€™s descent into madness is one of historyโ€™s most documented and most disturbing royal crises. His episodes came in waves โ€” sudden, violent, and terrifying to witness. He would speak for hours without stopping, foam forming at the mouth, his eyes wild, his words nonsensical. Courtiers stood helpless. Doctors were baffled. The Queen wept behind closed doors. During his worst episodes, he attacked members of his own court โ€” grabbing them, shoving them against walls, raving at them in languages he didnโ€™t speak. He once pinned his own son against a wall by the throat. The palace was not a seat of power during these periods. It was closer to an asylum. His physicians responded with the medicine of the time โ€” which is to say, with instruments of torture. He was restrained in a straitjacket. He was blistered, bled, and purged. The treatments made him worse. For years, an entire empire ran without its king. Parliament governed. Regency was debated. And George III sat in a darkened room, white-haired and blind, talking to people who were not there โ€” still king of a world he could no longer see.
