VIGiraffes are one of the strangest and most fascinating animals on Earth… and we still don’t talk about them enough.
First thing: there isn’t just “one” giraffe.
Scientists now recognize several distinct species, like the Northern giraffe, Masai giraffe, Reticulated giraffe, and Southern giraffe. Each one has its own unique coat pattern, almost like a fingerprint.
They live across different regions of Africa, from savannas to open woodlands, adapting to environments that look similar… but demand completely different survival strategies.
Now let’s talk size.
Giraffes are the tallest land animals on the planet. Males can reach up to 5.5 to 6 meters tall. Their neck alone can be around 2 meters long… yet it has the same number of vertebrae as a human neck. Just seven.
Their hearts can weigh over 10 kilos and generate twice the blood pressure of most mammals just to pump blood all the way up to the brain.
And here’s where it gets even more interesting.
Their tongues can be up to 45–50 cm long and are dark blue or purple. This helps prevent sunburn while they spend hours eating leaves under the African sun.
They sleep less than you think. Sometimes only 20 to 30 minutes a day, often in short naps of just a few minutes.
They barely make sounds, which made scientists think they were almost silent… until low-frequency humming at night was discovered.
And yes, they fight.
Male giraffes engage in something called “necking”, swinging their necks like heavy weapons to establish dominance. It looks slow… but it’s incredibly powerful.
Despite their size, they can run up to 60 km/h for short distances.
And one more thing most people don’t realize:
Giraffes are currently vulnerable in the wild. Habitat loss and poaching have reduced their population significantly over the last decades.
So yeah…
They might look calm, elegant, almost unreal.
But giraffes are basically biological masterpieces built by evolution in ways that still surprise us.
