CAI just saved this tree before a disaster happened.
That’s a girdling root. It wraps around the trunk or major roots and slowly strangles the tree as everything thickens. Water and nutrient flow gets restricted, the canopy starts to look “off”, growth stalls, and in bad cases the tree can fail without anyone realising the cause.
Common signs to watch for:
A tree that lags behind its neighbours, a swollen or pinched looking trunk at the base, roots circling in the planting hole, or the trunk disappearing straight into a tight root collar instead of flaring out naturally.
Why it happens:
Usually from pot bound seedlings, planting too deep, or a root that started circling early and never got corrected.
What to do:
Catch it early. Expose the root flare, inspect the collar, and remove or redirect the problem root before it becomes structural. Do it cleanly and don’t bury the collar again.
This is the unsexy stuff that keeps an orchard producing.

Until recently, we thought of girdling trees as a way to kill an unhealthy tree, or a tree crowding a healthier tree, while retaining it as a “snag” — which is a really important habitat feature for all kinds of different critters. Now we know that when we girdle trees it kills them too quickly — not giving time to the slow-growing wood rot fungi essential to creating tree cavities to establish and thus not creating snags that are great habitat for wildlife. ANGirdling or circling roots can cause serious issues for your tree! Girdling roots most commonly occur on trees that spent too much time growing in a nursery pot. When they’re planted, their root balls are usually not properly loosened, and the roots continue to circle.
Mulch volcanoes and improper planting technique (planting too deep) also promotes girdling roots.
These roots can be addressed on young trees by cutting small roots during the dormant season. Don’t cut too many roots in one year, and avoid cutting your tree’s larger, structural roots.

GS➰️ حلقهبرداری (Girdling / Ring Barking) یعنی برداشتن یه نوار باریک از پوست شاخه یا تنه تا جریان انتقال قندها به ریشه موقتاً کم بشه و مواد غذایی در بالای برش جمع بشن. این کار باعث افزایش گلدهی، بهبود تشکیل میوه و درشتتر شدن میوهها میشه.
🔬 روش انجام:
با چاقوی تیز یک حلقه باریک و کامل به ضخامت 3-6 میلیمتر روی تنه یا شاخه بارده ایجاد کنید. دقت کنید که فقط پوست برداشته بشه و به چوب آسیب نرسه. حلقهبرداری معمولاً در اوایل فصل رشد یا بعد از تشکیل میوه انجام میشه. (معمولاً در بهار تا اوایل تابستان)
🌱 این تکنیک بیشتر در درختان انگور، مرکبات، انار، انجیر و برخی درختان میوه که رشد رویشی زیاد و باردهی کم دارن کاربرد داره.

روی درخت ضعیف یا بیمار انجام ندهید، برش عمیق نزنید و روی تنه اصلی بدون تخصص کار نکنید.
بعد از انجام، آبیاری و تغذیه مناسب رو حفظ کنید تا درخت سریعتر ترمیم بشه.
