CUThe glass frog (family Centrolenidae) is a small, nocturnal amphibian from the rainforests of Central and South America. Its name comes from its translucent underside, which reveals its internal organs and gives the frog one of the most distinctive appearances in the animal world.

This transparency works as camouflage. By letting light pass through its skin and reducing the contrast of its internal structures, the frog blends into the leaves it rests on. Its skin and muscles transmit light, and its pale organs avoid casting strong shapes or shadows. When resting, it even stores most of its red blood cells in its liver, removing the bright colour that would otherwise reveal it. With no clear outline or contrasting colours, predators scanning for shapes often fail to recognise it as an animal.
