AUGold deposits rarely form in flat, horizontal rock layers. Instead, they often follow structures that dip through the Earth’s crust.
In geology, dip describes the angle at which a rock layer, vein, or fault slopes downward into the ground. When gold-bearing fluids move through fractures or faults, they frequently deposit gold along dipping structures, creating veins that extend deep beneath the surface.
This is why understanding dip is so important for gold prospectors.
A gold vein that appears small at the surface may actually continue down the dip direction, forming a much larger mineralized system underground. Many historic gold mines followed these dipping veins hundreds—or even thousands—of feet below where the gold was first discovered.
When prospecting in the field, look for:
• Quartz veins that angle into the hillside
• Fractures and faults with visible mineralization
• Iron staining along dipping structures
• Altered rock zones extending down slope
