What I show on my account is not cultural burning and we are not burning in the name of Indigenous peoples. We are not the first humans to use fire as a tool. Since time immemorial, Indigenous peoples used fire to manage areas for plants and animals. Cultural burning is Indigenous practice of using fire as medicine. I am not a voice for Indigenous peoples. To label groups of people as disadvantaged, voiceless, underprivileged, etc. is in fact racist. To come at me, an Asian woman who was not even born in the US and keyboard scream at me for “colonization” is radical and harmful. I mention that we are not the first humans to use fire as a tool because it needs to be said. With that, Indigenous peoples have their own voice. Do not strip them of their voice. If people want to advocate that’s none of my business and do what you want. Some people do want so called “privileged” people to speak for them, but that’s recognizing that other people are superior. Imagine telling a person they’re “disadvantaged”. It is in fact patronizing, insulting, and demeaning to have this mindset. I do follow some great Indigenous accounts who speak to cultural burning. I invite them to use their voice to let people know how to find 👇🏽 them. I will not tell their story, because it is not my story to tell. Through CAL FIRE’s Vegetation Management Program, firefighters with the (tag) CAL FIRE San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono Unit recently worked on a 1,400-acre fuel-reduction project near Independence. The reduced vegetation that could fuel wildfire, removed invasive plants, and restored wildlife habitat to help lower wildfire risk and protect nearby communities. We created this animation as part of our Fuels to Flows Campaign to give viewers a short, simplified introduction to the ecological restoration practice of "gully stuffing." Particularly applicable in the arid western US where there is a lot of effort being put towards wildfire fuel load reduction and defensible space work, gully stuffing offers a low-tech answer to the question "What should I do with all of the slash?" Gully stuffing is one tool in the toolbox of process-based restoration methods that keeps this beneficial biomass in place (rather than burning it, hauling it away, etc.) to build soil, heal erosion, capture carbon, reduce emissions, and promote rehydration in upland landscapes.
