RPGoogle just released the most capable open-source model in the world.
It’s called Gemma 4, and it wasn’t too long ago that running a model as powerful as this required seriously expensive hardware, with trade-offs.
Now it can run on just about any laptop or computer you might have at home.
(Note: the default 8b version. Gemma-4 26b will still require a fairly powerful machine)
This is a big leap for the open-source community.
One of the most important things to understand here, is the Apache 2.0 license it was released under.
It’s a commercially permissive license, which means you are allowed to do almost anything you want with the code.
You can use it to build a giant company and make billions of dollars.
You can take the code and modify it, even redistribute it to all of your friends and sublicense a new version of it.
