10 volume for grey coverage? I used to really struggle with grey coverage for years. I didn’t understand that I was essentially doing too much when formulating with 20 volume to get grey coverage resulting in hot roots or complete loss of tone as my clients would come back in very brassy between their 4-6 week appts. Most schools teach standard 20 volume developer for grey coverage but here’s what happens. Scenario : My client is a natural level 5 and needs to match her natural level but also cover grey. So I grab 5/0 with 20 volume and process for 35-45 minutes. 20 volume has a lot of energy and will ultimately lift and expose the underlying pigment before it deposits the final color with permanent color there is a lift and deposit cycle. She ends up with that root glow which will only get warmer over the upcoming weeks. Developer is merely the energy. You’re actually getting the coverage from the tube of color because it has an alkalizing agent in it either MEA or Ammonia. This will swell the cuticle and allow the dye to penetrate to the cortex. By reducing my developer to 10 volume I’m essentially only lifting for a very short time and the rest of the my processing time is depositing my artificial pigment giving me more tonal control and better coverage. I’ve shared this numerous times and the amount of stylists who’ve messaged me or tagged me after they’ve tried it is amazing because it’s one of those tips that is so simple but changes your grey coverage game. I don’t have to constantly adjust my clients color anymore unless we have extenuating circumstances that alter it. Confession: I always use 10 volume for Grey Coverage. 😅 There I said it!! It works amazing for me and has for over a decade. 20 volume exposes too much underlying pigment and creates a lot of unnecessary warmth and fade-age. Switching all and I mean ALL of my grey retouch clients to 10 volume solved my problems. I got better coverage, tonality and longevity. If you’re nervous to take the plunge drop your 20 to 15 (equal parts 10 & 20) first and tip toe into the change. You’ll still see a huge difference doing that. Have you tried it? "✨ PERMANENT COLOR WITH 10 VOL: sometimes 20 volume exposes too much warmth or gives too much lift. Try 10 or even 15 volume! (In most cases, unless the grey is reallllyyyy super resistant, I can get grey coverage with 10 or 15 vol). ✨ DEMI PERMANENT COLOR: This is my favorite if your client is open to blending the grey instead of fully covering every single strand. It usually leaves you with way less unwanted warmth, it’s more gentle on the hair AND it can be easier to lighten in the future. Plus, it’s much more natural looking and is a lower maintenance option for the client. ***Not all demi permanent colors are created equal! Pick an alkaline demi like @schwarzkopfusa Igora Vibrance (and use 13 volume!) for the best blending! ✅ BONUS TIP: you can also get AMAZING grey coverage when you apply color to damp (instead of dry) hair! I’m not a chemist but here’s my understanding of why this works: The pH of water is higher and more alkaline than the pH of hair, so water swells and opens the cuticle, thus making it easier for the color to penetrate the hair and cover the grey!"
