Major new study on diet and IBD - here’s what you need to know: Researchers from Harvard, MIT, King’s College London, and Oxford followed over 570,000 people for more than a decade to see how diet impacts the risk of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (IBD). They looked at how closely people followed a healthy plant-based diet — high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and low in animal products, processed foods, and added sugar. Here’s what they found: People with the healthiest plant-based diets were: - 23% less likely to develop Crohn’s disease - 17% less likely to develop ulcerative colitis Among people who already had IBD: - Those with a healthier plant-based diet were 25% less likely to be hospitalised - 21% less likely to require steroid treatment - And had a trend toward fewer surgeries The researchers concluded: “Encouraging greater adherence to a healthy plant-based dietary pattern may be an effective strategy to lower the incidence of IBD and reduce the burden of disease among patients already diagnosed.” Take home: A diet rich in whole plant foods could help prevent IBD - and may also lead to better long-term outcomes for those already living with the disease. ⚠️ My important caveat: If you’re living with IBD - especially if you have a stoma, strictures, or active disease - always speak to your dietitian or specialist before making significant changes to your diet. Individualised advice is key Citation: Composition of plant-based diets and the incidence and prognosis of inflammatory bowel disease: a multinational retrospective cohort study. Jie Chen et al. The anxiety/gut connection and how to break the cycle 👇🏼 Anxiety & stomach issues often go hand in hand, and this can typically be for 2 reasons: 1. Anxiety triggers the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which can cause digestive issues (nausea, bloating, upset stomach etc) 2. When our bodies are stressed, we go into fight or flight mode (aka your sympathetic nervous system is activated) and our digestion stops because the body considers it a nonessential process when we are in that state (your body prioritizes survival, not breaking down lunch) If you experience any type of health anxiety, it can create the oh so lovely vicious cycle that causes more anxiety, causing more nausea/stomach issues, causing more anxiety, and low and behold you have the anxiety-nausea hamster wheel 2 ways to heal this: 👉🏼Support your gut health (your gut & brain are constantly in communication and this plays a HUGE role in healing anxiety). A few ways to do this to start are by filling your plate with whole, nutrient dense foods, limiting your intake of processed foods (pay attention to your ingredients!!), chewing thoroughly to support digestion, & eating balanced meals 👉🏼 regulate your nervous system: some simple ways to do this are through deep breathing/breathwork practices, slowingggg your pace down in your day, EFT tapping, cold showers, ear massages and humming Your brain + gut want to work together, you just have to give them the right environment 💛 #gutbrainconnection

Love onions but they don’t love you back? It’s Episode 8 of GOOD GUTS, a nutrition series to help YOU get the good happening in your guts. In this ep, I’m giving you a food hack to get your onions loving you back! Onions are one of the most common FODMAP triggers. FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. FODMAPS are a group of sugars/carbohydrates that in some people with sensitivities can cause bloating, wind, and discomfort. Here’s a simple hack for you to test if that’s you, or if (not FODMAP intolerant and) you just want to dial up your delicious food game : pickle your red onions in an apple cider vinegar, water and salt solution. This process draws out some of the fructans, the FODMAP in onions, making them easier to tolerate. You’ll still get the flavour punch from the onion AND a side of organic acids from the vinegar to support your gut health. If you’re sensitive to FODMAPs then try this hack but do it in small doses, that way you can get to know your tolerance limit. Slow and steady folks, slow and steady. To make pickled red onion: ✨ Slice red onion ✨ Create a 1:1 ratio with apple cider vinegar (with the mother) and boiling water + good pinch of salt, then allow to cool slightly. ✨ Add sliced onion to a jar, pour the liquid solution over and pickle for 1 hour minimum (but overnight is best). The onions need to be submerged to avoid unwanted bacterial growth. ✨ Store in the fridge up to 2 weeks- remember to eat them! BONUS: this is an excellent way to use up bit of red onion you may have cut into for another recipe but don’t want it to go to waste. Not only do red onions pack a punch of flavour but they’re high in antioxidant, quercetin, too. Bang for ya buck! 📌 Save this one and send to a friend, and don’t miss the next Ep of GOOD GUTS by hitting follow @brownpapernutrition

🕳️Most people are using shaker plates for lymphatic drainage and puffiness. What surprised me was the digestive effect. ☝🏻Here’s the context 👇 The lymphatic system runs alongside the gut and plays a role in immune clearance, inflammation, and fluid balance. Gentle vibration can also stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the state required for digestion and bowel movements. 👉🏻When lymph flow improves and the body shifts out of “fight or flight,” gut motility often improves too. 🚨That’s why some people notice: • less bloating • easier bowel movements • less post-meal heaviness ☝🏻This isn’t a gut “hack” or a replacement for root-cause work — it’s a reminder that digestion is neurological, immune, and mechanical, not just about food. 👉 Save this 👉 Share with someone curious about the shaker plate trend #LymphaticDrainage #GutBrainConnection #DigestiveHealthTips #NervousSystemSupport #BloatingRelief

So many people think the answer to gut issues is loading up on raw salads and smoothies. But here’s the truth… if your digestive system is already inflamed, that’s the worst thing you can do. What your gut really needs is warmth and ease. Think soups, stews, herbal teas, bone broth, and gently cooked fruits like pears or blueberries. Even a simple cream of rice with manuka honey can be a healing breakfast. Your body was designed to heal…and when you nourish it with foods that are easy to digest, you give your gut the chance to repair, reduce inflammation, and truly thrive. My recent podcast on the gut-brain connection dives into the gut disruptors sabotaging your mental clarity—and the foods, herbs, and daily habits that can restore that connection. Kabhi notice kiya hai — jab stress zyada hota hai, toh pet bhi upset feel karne lagta hai? Yeh coincidence nahi hai. Science ke according gut aur brain directly connected hote hain, jise gut-brain axis kaha jata hai. Jab body stress mode me hoti hai — deadlines, tension, anxiety, ya constant phone notifications — toh digestion automatically slow ya irregular ho sakta hai. Isi wajah se kuch logon ko bloating, gas, stomach heaviness, constipation, ya loose motions stress ke time zyada feel hote hain. Digestive health sirf food se nahi, mind state se bhi influence hoti hai. Simple habits jo gut ko calm rakh sakti hain: • Khana aaram se aur dhyan se khana • Deep breathing ya short breaks lena • Stress levels manage karna • Proper sleep aur routine maintain karna Jab mind relaxed hota hai, toh digestion bhi smoothly kaam karta hai. 👉 Aise hi gut health tips, digestion awareness aur daily habits ke liye Dr. Haathi ko follow karte raho. Agar digestive symptoms frequently ho rahe hain, doctor se consult zaroor karein. #GutBrainConnection #guthealth #aivideo #digestiontips #explorepage

What If Your Gut Is Driving Your Mood 🧠 Most people think anxiety or low mood starts in the brain. But here’s the truth: up to 90 percent of your neurotransmitters are made in the gut. So when the microbiome is inflamed or out of balance, your brain feels it instantly. A 2022 study found that gut bacteria can influence your neurochemistry, your emotional health, and even how well therapy or medication works. And yet most mental health plans never look at the gut at all. A healthy mind isn’t only about the brain. You also need: • a balanced gut microbiome 🌱 • a strong gut lining 🧩 • enough digestive enzymes 🔬 • healthy stomach acid levels 💧 And here’s the part most people miss: As you age or take certain medications, enzyme and acid levels drop. So even with a great diet, you may not be digesting food well, which disrupts the microbiome and affects your mood all over again. Healing emotional health means supporting the whole system, not just the symptoms ❤️‍🩹 🎙️ New episode from hol+ by Dr. Taz 📺 Watch the full conversation 💬 Comment “PODCAST” to get the link #GutHealth #MentalHealth #Microbiome #AnxietyRelief #FunctionalMedicine #GutBrainConnection #HolisticMentalHealth #HealthyGut #DepressionHelp #BrainHealth #HolisticHealth
