The Flying Hatchet | الفأسُ الطائر
On a cliff in the wild, peregrine falcons defend their nest from larger pelicans. The fastest birds on earth dive-bomb intruders with speed and agility, occasionally striking with fierce attacks. Though pelicans pose no threat to chicks, the falcons’ relentless protective instincts and alertness ensure safety for their offspring. On most occasions, the attacked pelicans manage to fly away but in some instances they are killed due to the high speed of the pursuit.
على جُرْفٍ جبليٍّ في قلبِ البريّة، تُدافعُ صقورُ الشاهين عن أعشاشِها من اقترابِ طيورِ البجعِ الضخمة؛ تَهبِطُ بأقصى سرعتِها، وتغوصُ في الهواءِ؛ لتُهاجمَ الدُّخلاءَ بحركاتٍ دقيقةٍ وسرعةٍ مُبهرة. ورغم أنّ البجعَ لا يُشكِّلُ خطراً على صغارِها، فإنّ صقورَ الشاهين لا تتردّدُ حين يتعلّقُ الأمرُ بحمايتِها لتُجسِّدُ مشهداً فريداً من غريزةِ الأمومةِ المتأهِّبة، في اندفاعٍ لا يعرفُ هوادة. وغالباً ما يَنجو البجعُ من هجماتها، غير أنّ السرعةَ القاطعةَ أحياناً تكون كافيةً لإسقاطِه صريعاً.
