#HIPAA compliance is a big deal, and it’s often misunderstood. It’s not just about avoiding names or obvious identifiers. I teach my students and trainees that even casual conversations can unintentionally expose patient information.
For example, discussing “a hernia surgery I did today” with your medical colleague while in a public place may seem harmless—but someone overhearing could easily connect the dots 🧩. What if they know who had surgery at your hospital today? What if they’re a neighbor, coworker, or family member? It doesn’t take much to compromise someone’s privacy.
That’s why we must be extremely mindful of when, where, and how we talk about patient care. It’s also why I never post about surgeries in real time—anything I share is delayed by months or even years ⏳.
And to be very clear: I am extra careful about patient privacy because many of my patients are well-known and easily identifiable in their fields. That’s also why I don’t post photos with patients or share video testimonials. Your privacy is not just important—it’s everything 🔒.
At the same time, HIPAA does support communication between healthcare providers. It was designed to encourage collaboration and improve patient care—not block it. Unfortunately, many institutions misinterpret the law and create unnecessary barriers, like requiring signed consent for sharing records when it’s not always needed. This can delay care, which is frustrating 😕—especially since most of my patients come with complex histories and prior surgeries. Imagine the amount of extra work we have to go through just to get your records prior to consultation!😩
Dr. Reddy’s story is an important reminder of how nuanced this all is. I appreciate her honesty and vulnerability in sharing what must have been a very stressful experience as a young resident 🙏.
